I just went to a Moet Hennessy presentation, where they talked about the growth of Champagne and launching a new brand in Asia.
There was an interesting statistic put forward by the portly frenchman running things.
"On an average night, more Champagne is consumed in the square mile in the center of London than in the entire continental USA."
Can this be true, do Brits really love the fizzy so much (I can take it or leave it)?

i wouldn't doubt it, seems like the u.s. produces a lot of "sparkling wine" to offset the Champagne.

Yeah, I'm sure they were talking about Champagne in the strict sense, rather than generic champagne.

Yes, he was talking about Champagne as opposed to sparking wine.
Still a pretty amazing fact.

So, all he was saying is: Champagne isn't really a big deal anywhere except in London.

Never shun a good champagne, it can be quite nice. It also makes for a great panty remover.

That's the truth. It doesn't even have to be that good/authentic "Champagne". Chandon is drinkable (considering how much I hate Champagne, that's saying something), and can do wonders. >_>

I once drank a crate of 32 Buds (at 5%). And could still get "it" up later in the evening.
Never under-estimate a Brit's capacity for alcohol. Any alcohol. Because there's naff all else to do.

Kind of looks like a political map, Democrats vs Republicans. Perhaps from the last election. Or at least that would be my first guess.

It's not really that surprising. I don't think that many Americans drink champagne anymore. Of course, one square mile of New York on a Friday night probably consumes more beer than all of England.

Isn't it just because London is much closer to France, and Americans drink more American "champagne?"

From what I've heard, I'm not sure the "juice" readily available in the US should even count as such (generally speaking).

You mean what British do until 12?
Last time I was in a British pub, I was thrown out at 11:30 -- on a weekend no less --, although we wanted to stay and drink

Real Champagne is a trademark and has to come from a certain region in France. There are plenty of good `sparkling wines' that are produced in the same manner as Champagne and are actually a much better value (Crémant or good prosecco for instance).

How weird is that British pub thing, anyway?
Most places here, you don't even bother to *show up* until 11:30.

This is why you need to drink faster. If you were drinking at the proper rate you'd be hammered by 11 and thus not worried about kicking out time.

I'm sure it's moved society's clock forwards a few hours. Everyone seems to be at work by 6am these days. Odd, I tell ya.

Beats me.
They've even thrown us out of a restaurant at 7:30 on a Sunday!
The pub itself was quite funny: the bride wanted an Irish coffee (it was about 8:30 or so, basically we went there after being thrown out of the restaurant) and they replied: we've switched off the coffee maker. The groom was very English about it and replied that he hopes they haven't switched off the taps, too

Nope. It's just a matter of trademarks, same production process, they both taste very well, but a Crémant for 10 € will be better than a Champagne for 10 €: you pay for the name.
BTW, I'll have some very good Champagne tonight

Crémant is nice and everything, but it does not even come close to champagne.

He said "a Crémant for 10 € will be better than a Champagne for 10 €: you pay for the name."
Of course, *a* prime difference is that you'll be hard-pressed to find a Champagne for 10€ at all.

The champagne I've had tonight was fabulous. But on a bang-per-buck basis, crémant or good prosecco is better.
