This is my resident aquatic criminal, always trying to bail out.
He succeeded once, we found him behind the TV. But that loophole has been fixed.

I had a bimac octopus once. Had to secure the top of the tank very, very well or he would climb out. Very fun pet.
How long will your guy live?

That's actually normal.
Male sliders have long claws, and the middle one is the longest.
Shouldn't be trimmed.

So here is a picture of him when he's not trying to escape. He's is really a piece of work.
He loves to sleep being "suspended" between the rock and the aquarium glass. He "hangs" in there all night.

Well if he can't, why can he survive behind the TV and sleep all night underwater? I always thought there were 2 kinds of turtles...

I'm guessing t can give the lowdown or make corrections, but I think they're just holding their breath. There are turtles that can be oxygen deprived for over a day.
Some turtles can "breath" through their ass underwater, but even so, still need to breath the normal way at some point. Most turtles have the gear to do so, but it's either undeveloped or they don't use it as such.
Somewhat related tidbit: aquatic mammals pull off sleeping underwater by letting only one half of their brain sleep at a time.

You are right, they are just holding their breath.
And yes, some (few) turtles can breath through their asses. It's called 'cloaca bursae'.

This also explains what happens to most turtles vis-a-vis their spine when they tuck in their heads.
The other (rarer) kind goes in sideways and never quite goes all the way in like it does with the rest of them.
Unfortunately, this picture is a bit deceptive because the turtles who breath through their ass are also the same ones who's heads go in sideways.

Well, this pic is in sooo many ways deceptive. For starters, it shows a land tortoise, not a water / sea turtle.

Well, if you've got a better graphic representation of turtle ass breathing...

Awesome, I have to start a new thread, because I can't reuse a perfectly good thread from over 12 months ago. Stupid rule. Mods, feel free to merge this with the previous thread. I see no reason why we need a new one for this.

Anyways, he's at it again. I don't know how he's doing it.
Now, mind you, the turtle is only 5 inch long, so he climbed a distance greater than his shell.
I guess I gotta get one of these dog collars for him...

Maybe your turtle is bored.
I don't have any aquatic criminals but here's a pic of one of my discus...
and my tank at the moment (6x2x2)...
They just swim around all day being bastards to each other, which is the discus way.

I know a lot of politicians that can do the same. But they are only ever half using their brains.
