I think MacBreak weekly commented on the fact that they've introduced something new each week for the past month, month and half. Ridiculous.

I think that we should be careful to include a date on these "official OMG the Apple Store is down" threads-there are so many of them.
While I think new/updated laptops are imminent, they've also taken the store down for a while on the last few Tuesdays for minor tweaks, so there's no guarantee that "this is it." Sadly, at this point I'd LOVE for these new laptops to be the reason the store is down, because my wife is starting to feel the effects of her iBook's age...

True, but I also did this in somewhat of a tongue in cheek fashion since we all seem to get all worked up when the apple store closes.
while MB/MBPs are on the horizon, I started it more for giggles then anything

My response was also tongue-in-cheek. I don't see keeping one "OMG" thread separate from another as a big deal-they're all breathless and almost all a waste of time for anything but having a bit of fun.

My humble advice, if you will: As our resident Lounge Admin, start the official Store is down thread which is to be bumped whenever said event occurs, and then either lock or merge any extraneous threads that occur from here on out.
Edit: Yarr, looks like I'm too serious this early in the mornin'

I am still puzzled why they need to take down the site just to update inventory. It would seem just a few database updates would be required. No wonder WebObjects is dead.

If I was a Lounge mod, I might do that. Except they take the site down WAY too early for me-and I get up WAY too early for most people.

And the store is now back up as of about 6:35 EST. WITH NEW MBs AND MBPs! Wow. Looks like they're pretty much as predicted too.

If it hasn't shipped yet, he'll automatically get the new one; no need to cancel and re-order.

Wow...200 GB hard drive on the low-end. I'm so glad I waited...I might upgrade to a 250 GB.
Since my PowerBook has been slowly dying over the past few months, my work has offered to get a new MBP for me soon. Yeow!

Get the one with the 512MB video "for PowerPoint."

Never underestimate the frugality of a poor college student. I'm really surprised too that I've held on to her as long as I have for my primary computer. She does good! Illustrator 10 runs like a dream, and Photoshop 7 is more than workable. I put in the top of the line PCI graphics card for her (Radeon 32mb) and maxed out the ram, even overclocked her by 50mhz via jumpers (Gotta love the B&W motherboard!). But, alas I need something portable now, like all those spoiled punks running around on campus who feel that their entitled to have mommy and daddy buy them a new laptop every few months

Oh, trust me...I'd use any excuse possible if I knew that there was the slightest possibility of them going over $2,000. Fat chance of that though.

Weeeee doggy...super excited here.
Just ordered the "low-end" MacBook Pro with 250 GB hard drive. I'll be upping the RAM to 4 GB here in a few weeks/months. My poor, struggling 1.67 GHz PBook is finally getting sacked like Hillary's campaign manager.

No need for the snarkiness. I'm surprised they didn't automatically upgrade and simply make sure the BTO options were the same or better.

They're a lot like a computer-there's no way to "know" what you would want, so they don't change anything. Maybe you really needed exactly what you ordered and can't use the new version. Maybe you would want the upgraded X but the original Y, or vice versa.

wasn't meant to be snarky. and yes, they will send the new model, sometimes, if a new model is introduced before your original order is shipped. but that is only good for the base stock model number order.
in this case, the original order wasn't more RAM or CPU change, but the faster 200GB 7200RPM drive. 2GB was still the base, but now the base drive went from 160GB to 250GB.
i talked him into getting not getting the faster hard drive upgrade, but to max the memory win win for him since apple didn't ship the original BTO yet. i think his net price change was $137 or something when all said and done...for a hell of a lot faster machine with double the graphics memory, 2x the system memory with ugprade, a CPU increase and much more HD space. course, now he has to wait another week +, but well. it will be a nice damn machine!
