Or would it take a nickel to bend you over?
Or a dime?
A quarter?

At work they like to epoxy quarters to the floor and watch people try to pick them up. They think it's hilarious.

I don't usually bother unless it's $5 or more.

This would make a good poll but, absolutely I would! Those things add up. I love it when I find a penny on the ground and then at work somebody leaves four pennies in the leave a penny, take a penny cup, because then I have a nickle. Typically during a 7 hour shift I'll make ¢75 out of the take a penny cup (thats enoughto buy a fruit pie!). But My record is $4 (awesome). And I only take pennies for myself out of there if there's more than ¢5 worth. Since cigarretes are $3.96 here alot of people want to just give me $4 and not deal with the four pennies.

I work at a convenience store. Thank you, come again!

Thought about it, but I don't think that many of you actually participate in them. Or maybe you do. Hmmm, might need to do a poll to find out.

Anyway, I don't care about statistics, more interested in comments.

Simply because I live in a downtown area that has a lot of homeless. I figure they can use that money more than me. I did walk passed a ten dollar bill about two weeks or so ago and I looked at it, thought about it, but decided against it. While I passed it, another man heading towards me saw it and picked it up right away. Was he homeless? I don't know. But less fortunate then me, yes.

For good luck.

At home I pick up all coins, otherwise they get trapped in the vacuum or scuff the floors. If I'm out and about I'll stop for a quarter.

Outside of the home, I'd bend down if I dropped a quarter but I would not bother doing so for found money unless it was a two dollar coin or paper money.

I'll pick up any coin, but just because I hate littler.

Usually I point out the coins to my 4 year old and let her pick them up, it really makes her day and brightens her up to find money.

Good idea! As for me, it depends on the circumstances.. I will never stop for a coin unless it's at least a dollar, but I may pick up a quarter if I'm standing in line with nothing else to do, and if the floor is pretty clean.

What I do from time to time, however, is loiter around the bar when the danceclub closes at 3 AM.. I routinely find many 1$ and 2$ that patrons drop while paying for drinks when drunk

I talked to a coworker once about this. He had an interesting take on it. He said he would NEVER pick up money from the street, no matter how much. His conviction is that it is NOT his money, so he has no business picking it up and keeping it. He said he did not want to interfere with the owner maybe coming back and looking for it.

Sounded strange to me at first, but made me think. Yes, it's quite idealistic, because for sure, someone else will pick it up. But I like that he has a firm principle and that he's sticking to it.

We're in sync (if not in Zinc) on this. (The primary metal used in the minting of pennies is Zinc, since 1982.)

I lost $150.00 cash on vacation one time -- I'm slowly finding it back -- 2 $20.00's a wad of $1.00's and a whole lot of nickels, dimes, and quarters later, I'm probably still nearly $100.00 from balancing out. Sometimes I'll pick up a penny -- depends on whether I'm in a hurry or not.

Most of the time I do pick up abandoned change, whether it's a penny or a quarter or whatever. I usually wind up saving about $100 or so in change over a year, with a good chunk of it coming from anonymous donations such as abandoned change. It's impossible to quantify how little effort it takes to pick up a penny, and the action is actually good for you because it involves a number of important movements that help you maintain your balance, strength, flexibility, and manual dexterity. I'll never be "too good" or "too well off" or too anything else to just pick up lost change.

I'll take all your loose change, please.

If it's worth getting as change, it's worth picking up. Who are you people, Bill Gates?

Last week, I found a penny on top of the u-check-out and $1 in the change return. My cupcakes cost me 5 cents.

Um, many Greek Euro coins have people on them, as do several other countries' coins. So they do have a "heads" side.

Pick up a penny?

Yup, well sometimes. If it's really dirty no I don't. After I pick it up I whip it, I whip it good. Haven't heard anyone yelp yet.

I think we need to do away with the penny. It's a long time coming.

Round everything up or down to the nearest nickel.

Pennies cost more to make than what their worth.

Of course I would. That stuff adds up. Besides, I occasionally lose some coins myself, got to at least break even.

Related question: Those public fountains that tourists always throw change into, is it okay if I pick up that money? I once saw a film where this bloke got chased by some security guards or cops for doing just that, but I can't really think of a logical reason not to. It's not like it goes to charity, or anything, is it?

I don't know about government maintained park fountains, but the local mall has a fountain with a small sign with the charity the coins go to. I'm sure I've seen others with charities named before.

I would bet they are more supportive of the fellow who cleans it however.

Or we could just make them out of something other than copper. Anyway, this is kind of a red herring. If you think that the amount it costs to make a penny is inherently tied to how much it’s worth, then you might as well go back to the gold or silver standard.

We don't need to do away with the penny. We need a reformulated penny that lasts longer than the current penny. Look at it-if the current penny lasted longer, the Mint wouldn't need to replace it in circulation as much and the "cost of ownership" of the coin would fall. Also, at this moment metal prices are screwy-we can blame China for taking the lazy route and buying scrap instead of mining their own vast resources of EVERYTHING for this particular issue-so noting that at this moment it costs more than 1¢ to make a penny is really irrelevant. On the whole, it's always been significantly less expensive to make the penny than the penny has been worth.

I'd support a zinc penny, a steel penny with a zinc coating (like the sandwich design of the quarter), or any other base-metal composition for the coin. But we need the coin. Losing the penny would be a defacto change in the monetary basis of our economy-a devaluing of the currency by as much as 4¢ on the dollar. That may not sound like much, but it adds up. Like those pennies I keep collecting.

A zinc penny... maybe we would have fewer colds.

At least those of us who would pick one up.

Wait, picking up a penny is a good way to catch a cold.

Money is so dirty.

If you make more than minimum wage, it would be a much more efficient way to get rich just to work a little more. Even in a large room with pennies scattered all about, it would be hard to make more than $10/hour or so doing that.

That's not rich. That's just out of poverty.

(I'm thinking of a newspaper column a while back, in which they defined "rich". Less than $40m net worth was classed as "beri beri, scurvy, etc..".
