Gallagher: Yes or No?

Don't know who he is?

He was THE prop comic before Carrot Top.

THE event comic of the 1980's.

Here is a video of him early in his ascension to greatness.

Watch this before you vote.

YouTube - The Comedy Shop - Gallagher

And this one from after he'd become a phenomenon.

YouTube - Gallagher's Giant Couch

THEN, after watching these two videos, vote.

Gallagher: Yes or No?

I don't know and haven't watched the videos yet, but he was pretty entertaining on Howard today I'd say (which I assume is why you posted this thread, unless it was a giant conicidence).

His word association bit is one of the most humorous things I have seen. Intelligent as well.

I chose other. He might have been funny back when he first came around but comedy has really changed. I personally would rather see Dave Chappelle do his version of "Black Gallagher". I would post a link by comedy central takes everything off youtube.

Any comic with a "splash zone" has "edgy" written all over him. And Gallagher did the prop bit way better than Carrottop-who could believe Carrottop with the Sledge-O-Matic?

And Steven Wright sort of followed up Gallagher's "out there" stuff by going way, Way, WAY out there-"Skating on the Other Side of the Ice".

The real weirdness is that his brother stole his act and he had to sue to get it back.

My step-mom was at the luncheon where Gallagher first made it "big." There's no video of it, unfortunately, but man it would've been funny as hell.

I know I have the specifics wrong, but the story is funny anyway. It was a luncheon for a bunch of execs at IBM. People in nice suits and ties, women in expensive dresses and jewelry, etc. They're enjoying the standup and the props.

So Gallagher brings out a cantaloupe and sits it on box and walks around on stage pretty quiet. He pulls out an average sized sledge hammer and does his now-famous "about to hit the melon but drops the sledge hammer just in time" bit. He goes on about the cantaloupe, its structure, and how he thinks the hammer just doesn't do it justice.

Bare in mind these people haven't a CLUE what is going on. They've never seen him before. They're up there in their expensive suits and dresses.

He then bursts out into the sales pitch for the Sledge-O-Matic. The crowd laughs nervously. They think it's all just an act, but they're not sure. He goes back to his trunk and pulls out the Sledge-O-Matic. He charges up to the cantaloupe and does the "about to hit the melon but drops the Sledge-O-Matic just in time" bit once more. The crowd in the back was going nuts, and a few people in the front just get up and leave.

"Oh no. Cantaloupes are good, but watermelons... OH the watermelons are sooooo much better."

He takes out that bad boy and sticks it on the box. The crowd's going nuts, the people in the front row with their expensive suits and dresses are slack jawed. A few more people make a run for the door. They're thinking there's no f'in way this guy is crazy enough to do this.

BAM!!!

Watermelon all over thousand-dollar suits and dresses. Step-mom said she was pretty sure Gallagher was escorted off the premises because the attendees were not very happy.

Seconded!

Loved the story, and to be honest, I'm kind of glad there's no video of it. Gives it more of a historic feel. These kinds of things are much better passed on by word of mouth (or keyboard).

I usually played it at the local pizza eatery. I'd play it before the pizza came to the table, and then again after we were finished. I ruled.
