While reading my emails on Hotmail the other day, I noticed a strange banner ad on the top of the page, which was surprisingly direct... I found it funny, but at the same time I felt a little bit unconfortable...



The ad says, approximately, "My place or your place?" The sponsor is Lavalife, a popular dating site in Canada. I'm a bit disgusted that the society allows such direct statement... OK we all know many people visit these sites to find a one-night, but to do it so openly, officially, blatantly, on Hotmail??

I'm not particularly disgusted (I've been around long enough to be aware that casual sex does in fact take place), but I'm kind of surprised such a big dating site would want that image. Most Internet dating sites seem to focus on the whole "You can find your TRUE LOVE" side of things, presumably on the assumption that more women will maintain a subscription for that.

Have you seen Lavalife ads? I have occasionally on late night TV. Their TV ads look more like porn chat ads than anything resembling an actual dating site ad like something you'd see from match.com or chemistry.com.

This is all a little presumptuous, ain't it?

She might be saying "your place or mine" but she doesn't actually say for how long, does she? She might mean forever. You know, have the bunny already in the pot and everything.

FYI, Lavalife has always had three aspects to its "dating" - serious (for marriage), casual (canoodle buddies) and friends.

And if you think that's blatant, you ain't seen the ads up the side of the Pirate Bay.

If it's more of an attention getter, then it's a very effective one-and not something that bothers me. We ARE talking about advertising here, and the point is to get your attention. Obviously this one did. What you do with that attention is the gamble both the ad agency and their client take in placing that ad. I think it reflects poorly on the site's customers, but it got my attention...

I would hope that such banner ads were targeted at more adult sites, such as Hotmail (which requires an age statement), rather than just being randomly tossed out there. It didn't even occur to me that such ads would be placed anywhere but where some marketer had determined that single adults frequented.

I didn't see your somewhat hidden text until after I'd typed my reply, but my reply stands. If this sort of ad is being placed randomly, it's bad. If it's part of the Microsoft Evil Empire Advertising Placement Conspiracy (also known as tracking your surfing), then that's not at all bad-for the advertisement. But otherwise, it's stupid.

I'm not offended, but I am somewhat surprised considering the wide audience of Hotmail and the trend of dating sites to try to elevate themselves above the porn that is so pervasive over the Internet. I wonder how many women see those ads and immediately think, "Lavalive must suck"?

It must look at your account details. I bet it doesn't show up if you're logged in to a woman's account, or to a child's account.
