Here's an interesting article published last month by Tom's Hardware on AMD and a potential merger or buyout between it and Nvidia or IBM. I found it particularly interesting because it goes into a lot of detail concerning insider politics between ATI, AMD, Nvidia, Intel and IBM. IT geeks may not be as interested.

I don't know why IBM would be interested. They aren't interested in the consumer market, and already have industry-leading performance with their supercomputer setups for business and government.

I'm not sure I'd trust Tom's Hardware assessment.
In any case, I'm glad I sold my shares of ATI when they merged with AMD. AMD is now worth about a third of what it was worth back in July 2006.

But they do provide console chips right now and could corner that market with a buyout of AMD. Why shouldn't IBM avail itself of the opportunity to expand market share if possible?

Why would an AMD purchase corner the console chip market?
Remember, this would be about FUTURE contracts, not current ones.

Okay, corner the market is the wrong term to use. It would be a substantial gain though.

IBM isn't in the console business, which has horrible margins and consumes a lot of corporate bandwidth. It'd be a waste of money, and they know it.

Ok, let's consider that hypothetically... If IBM wanted more traction in the console chip market, they'd probably buy a video chipset company. So the main reason to own AMD would be for ATI. The AMD part would be extra baggage.
But I doubt they want anything to do with that market segment in the first place, which means that actually both AMD and ATI would be extra baggage.
