Ok, I guess I'd been living under a rock, but a few weeks ago a friend sent me a link to a video of Journey with their new lead singer Arnel Pineda. My jaw hit the floor, damn this guy is good.

YouTube - Journey with Arnel Pineda at Chile - Open Arms

What do you guys think? The vocal similarities to Perry are amazing and the guy has an endless amount of energy on stage (unlike Perry). I can't wait to get my hands on the new album and see them live when they perform in Charlotte.

Check out the other clips too.

He sounds ridiculously close to Perry. I thought, "Man, he's younger than the rest though."

He's like 40-years-old. I guess that is young for Journey though.

Whoa. It gets better. Check out the guy's history, according to his Wikipedia entry.

Pineda, born in Sampaloc, Manila, in the Philippines, began singing at age 5. His parents, both tailors, encouraged him to enter amateur singing contests. When Pineda was 12, his mother died after a long illness at age 35, leaving his family in serious debt. Pineda's father took his three younger brothers Russmon, Roderick and Joselito to live with relatives.

Pineda, as the eldest, had to quit school and collect scrap metal, bottles and newspapers at the pier in Manila to earn money. Pineda was living in the streets, sleeping in Luneta Park or, when possible, on a wooden bench at a relative's house. In a TV interview with Jessica Soho ("Kapuso Mo"), Pineda described waiting and watching while his relatives ate breakfast in the mornings, hoping some food would be left over for him to eat. Pineda dreamed of becoming an engineer.

Reflecting on his childhood, Pineda said he felt no self-pity. He always kept a positive outlook, thinking "Gaganda rin 'to" (Things will get better).

Don't stop believin'!

Seriously, my friend didn't tell they had a new lead, so I clicked the link and my first thought was:

"Who's this little guy?"

my second thought was:

"Sweet Jesus, he stole Perry's voice."

third thought:

"This is LIVE, Steve never sounded this good in concert."

forth:

"Where do I buy their new album? When can I go see them?"

Hell no, I've always enjoyed them. It's great to see such an important band revitalized by "new" talent. It's nothing short of amazing.

No kidding, bands almost never sound that good live. Can't wait to hear how he does with the Journey classics in a studio. It wouldn't surprise me if he completely blows Perry out of the water, damn this guy has pipes.

That's unfortunate. They aren't my favorite band by a long shot, but I've always appreciated their talent.

There must be a rash of Perry soundalikes. I saw a Journey tribute band in Trinidad of all places. The lead singer, Dan, not only sounded exactly like Steve Perry, he even looks like him.

Who's the drummer? It's not Steve Smith or Aynsley Dunbar, is it?

Journey died for me with Jonathan Cain. That said, Arnel Pineda can sing. Like to here him belt out "Anyway You Want It."

Finally someone who agrees, every bar I go to plays don't stop believing. I hear it every weekend, at every bar, every karaoke bar. Thank god for satellite radio so I can listen to stations that DON"T play journey.

Very impressive. It would be interesting to see them live now.

Journey played a pivotal role in my teenage years. Back when MTV had about 30 different video to play, (and back when they only played videos), I remember my and friends sitting and waiting for Separate Ways - Worlds apart to come on so we could rock out our air guitars, keyboards, and drums. Just watching this video brings back serious nostalgia of a much simpler time. YouTube - Journey-Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

Other good bands from the era were REO Speedwagon, Loverboy, Foreigner.

I'm impressed. I saw Journey in concert at the Coliseum in Newport News, VA in 1982. Loverboy opened for them. Yes, Perry's voice was not as good "live" as it was recorded (enhanced). I would go see them again now.

See if this doesn't blow your hair back.

Exactly!

Cool story about his past too! From the park bench to stage... I bet he's a kick to tour with!

Journey was the Creed of the 80s. Slammed by critics, but sold millions of records.

Bogus.

Perry was good in the studio but crap on the road, have you ever watched him on stage? He had the energy of week-old roadkill, and I went to see them before he hit 40.

I dunno how old he was but I saw them at CalJam1 and later at CalJam2 too I think. It's
hard to remember just how they were I was flying so high the whole time.

I remember all the people around me talking about how different Boston was on stage
and in studio tho.

Uh, yes I did. He had a lot of energy when I went to see him. He was no Bruce Dickinson but I had no problems with him.

No issues with voice cracking, fudging the high notes, or staying rooted to one spot? All those were evident when I saw him live, and in most concert clips I've seen.

Yeah, Boston and Toto were gods in the studio, but when you heard them in the wild it was almost painful.

being slammed by critics and selling millions of records does not make a band similar to Creed.

Creed is kinda terrible. Journey rocks.

Back when Nickelodeon first started they ran a Cars concert. They came out, Ric Ocasek stood there and did not move and they sounded exactly like they did on their studio albums, solos and all. How boring is that?

Whoa! When did Icy become a Mod?

I think Journey is alright, nothing special...I think most of you old dudes that love them are just nostalgic about your younger days.

Time to pick some new bars, if you don't like it. And... Karaoke bar? What do you expect?

P.S. I don't mind Journey, but I can't say I've heard a Journey song in the bar in the past 5 years.

Yeah, it's a generation thing, so I've been unusually quiet on the subject.

Jawbone's comparison was a little odd, though.

I somehow doubt Journey was as universally picked on as Creed was, especially at its height.

True story: About 5 years ago I was at my friend's house, his sister gets free tickets to concerts and stuff. She had given him two tickets to Creed, we were right around the corner, so we were like "how bad can it be?"

It was bad. We left after like two songs. We were embarassed that we even went.

Oh, and Journey still gets played in the clubs sons.

I seem to remember stories about Scott Stapp being so drunk at a performance he forgot the words to the song.

Actually, I think this was featured on Daily Show.

Scot Stapp is up there on my list of completely worthless people. He has zero redeeming qualities.

Well, I can forgive that, it was much the same when I saw Devo, they stayed in one spot but gave a pretty solid performance.

That's part of it, I'm sure. I know I have quite a few memories attached to many of their songs, I can say the same for Rush, Queen, Dire Straits, etc.. They all wrote some solid music, but it's the context that makes the difference.

I didn't say that Creed was even worthy of licking Journey's shoes (or is that tying? ah...it works here).

I just said that they were both critically panned, but still sold albums left and right. Journey just did it all on a larger scale, and still gets played everywhere you turn.

I remember seeing New Order in '88 and they didn't move a step the whole night. But they rocked! and the crowd was crazy! Having PIL open up for them was genius.

Steve Smith not being in the band is like losing ones legs. He's one of the best drummers in the world in any style. Hard to lose that kind of cred.

Not to worry, Steve Smith is doing just fine on his own.

Rock Star (2001). Starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston.

Plot Outline: Lead singer of a tribute band becomes lead singer of the real band he idolizes.
