Hi all,
There's a domain that I want that expires on Saturday. I went through this process before with starman.com and somehow I couldn't get the domain because even though it had expired, for some reason I couldn't register the domain for myself. Once the domain expires, is there some kind of grace period or something I have to wait to be over?

Yes, there is a grace period. I let a domain expire because it did not serve a purpose any longer. I had a month+ to renew that after it expired. I think the grace period is either 30 days or 45 - not sure.

Also I wonder if squatters put in for expired domains as well so you may have competition for it.

I really don't care if I lose the domain, but I'm at this point where I could contact the person and ask if they want to sell/transfer it, or deal with the lapse. Either way, I believe there's a potential to lose the domain, it's a question of which is less risky.

I didn't say starman.com was expiring, I said I went through this once when it did.

to be honest, that may be your best bet to snag that domain, but the risk of course there is the owner may see $$ and try to extort more money, and may also just renew it, since you can do that for only a few bucks.

Not sure what to recommend.

The way I see it, it's not THAT crucial to my life if I get it or not, it would just be neat, that's all. I have a domain I'm happy with right now.

Try to backorder it with the registrar that it's currently under, if possible.

I heard the grace period is something like 60 days and they even extended it to longer most of the time. The only sure fire way is to contact them directly and ask if they want to sell it.

Ok, so you don't care, then why do you care? You either want this or you don't. Make a decision. If you do, backorder it. Use Godaddy or some other ridiculous medium. Grace periods vary depending on where you registered, typically 30 days though.

Also, you do know that many registrars set domain names to renew right before their dates of expiration. You may be rudely surprised to find that it gets renewed the day it's supposed to expire.

You know not everything has to be black and white. I understood the OP, insofar is that it would be nice to snag the domain if feasible, but not important enough to expend lots of time or money to try to get it.

Wow, I never noticed that. I suppose if I had my eye out for a domain that was expiring, that would piss me off

You're right. I'm a f*cking assh*le. I should never waste my time on posting thoughts again. In fact, why don't you become the new NN morality police?

I just don't see why it's so hard to understand the problem. I'd like something, but I'm not about to go all hell-bent to get it. MacosNerd understood, why do I have to get a lecture from someone else?

My apologies.

I am not that hell bent on getting Apple's domain, but I would like it. How can I do that? I realize that it will take time and effort and money, but I don't want to expend those things. Instead of researching this topic myself, like reading the policy of the domain registrar, I will just ask other people.
