I'd really like it if Apple left this alone, but we all know what Jobs' reaction is going to be...

I don't think Apple can stop them.

They couldn't stop them with a software update of some sort, similar to the one used to brick hacked iPhones?

Apple isn't writing the phone's software, so they can't brick it. From the article, it sounds like the phone is communicating with iTunes through a proxy application, in which case the only way to bust it would probably be to yank AppleScript support from iTunes.
It's noteworthy that they don't say the phone can play Fairplay tracks, by the way — just that it can sync music with iTunes.

I don't see what the problem is. Lots of mp3 players used to be able to sync with iTunes. They just can't play songs from the iTunes store, and the blackberry has what, like 1 gig of storage?

I don't see Apple going out of their way to prevent 3rd party players from syncing with iTunes.
The recent BlackBerries all have microSDHX slots, so you can add 4GB today and more in the future.

I don't think Apple will mind a whole lot. And it wouldn't be able to play DRM laden tracks anyway.

I don't really see what the problem is here. They use a separate application to copy the non-DRM that are managed by iTunes. So what? Not nearly as convenient as having actual sync built into iTunes (like lots of MP3 players used to do before the iPod).
On that note, did Apple stop allowing built in sync for third party devices post iPod or were third party manufacturers just discouraged by the iPod to continue doing it? I know there's still support in iTunes for those early players (Rio?).

I think it would be more accurate to say Apple stopped building in support for new third-party devices.

True. I forgot that this was Apple doing the support, not the vendors.
