I'm headed to Bonnaroo in 2 weeks, and the concerts go from noon til 4 a.m. daily for 4 days basically. Obviously I won't be at shows the entire time, I'll be relaxing at my campsite and such, but I want to catch as many shows as possible and want to be wide awake and ready to party all weekend. Can anyone recommend a good energy drink or pill? I've seen those 5 hour energy shots at gas stations, do they work? any side effects?

Aren't those energy drinks a scam?
Water water water. Eat something like a cereal bar to keep you going.

Oh boy, an obvious lose-lose situation.
You either abstain from alcohol ("lose") and are awake for the whole time, or you drink tons of alcohol and are asleep half of the time ("lose").

Pft, just drink copious amounts of alcohol and water.
Throw some food in there sometime as well.
Better yet, take a meat syringe and fill up oranges with vodka. You get drunk and eat at the same time.

I quit coffee in favor of these:
Much nicer to my stomach and with loads of caffeine, they are actually 50% juice too (Snapple is like 13%) Sucrose instead of HFCS. The only thing that pisses me off is that they used to be 70% with sucralose (splenda) instead of real sugar.
Of course if I have more than one it gives me the shakes....and yes, you'll need to hydrate the hell out of yourself if you drink anything with this much caffeine.

2 little packets of sucralose (splenda) was making my mom's hair fall out. Your mileage may vary, but beware just the same. At least you understand the dangers of sugar.
I back what Paul said (we are in the same gang afterall :shiftyeyes
Water like crazy. Eat as healthy as possible. Protein and carbs in good amounts. Eat as RAW as possible. Fruits. Veggies. Good quality protein bars. You will have more energy than stuffing yourself with some crazy energy drinks and crashing in an hour.

I'm not a fan of manufactured sugar-like substitutes either. I'd rather the ingredient just be plain-old f**kin SUGAR. Just like how Nantucket Nectars uses cane sugar as their sweetener.

Yup. With straight up sugar you just need to run for another 3 minutes. I use the little brown "sugar in the raw" packets whenever possible. I get all the rest of the -ose sugars confused (sucrose, fructose, sucralose, glucose, etc). I think the fructose one is OK...I can't keep them straight.

Um, the active ingredient in Guarana IS caffeine.

Don't bother with energy drinks. The only thing they do for you is fill you full of sugar and caffeine. The other "natural" or "herbal" ingredients are either completely, ineffectual garbage or merely another form of caffeine. (as is the case with Guarana)

I don't do caffeine or any other so-called energy supplement so no thanks.

It's well documented that Guarana and Caffeine have similar, yet subtly different effects. Guarana has a longer lasting, more pleasant effect of being awake, without the traditional side-effects of caffeine like "jitters" and the feeling of tiredness after the effects wear off (crash).
This is of course null and void if you drink energy drinks which also contains copious amounts of pure caffeine and sugar to boot.

I have tried the 5-hour Energy drink. It is mostly B-Vitamins. No sugar or carbs.

I wouldn't call it's effect "energy". I drink half a bottle at about 11AM on a saturday and then "feel" like doing something the rest of the day (until about 7-9PM). Not hyper, just motivated. Make sure you eat or you might have jitters. I take it when I want to work on cleaning the garage, work on cars, or work in the yard. Seems to work for me.
Otherwise, take some B6 and B12 vitamins in the morning with breakfast.

Also, Rockstar Juiced has 100% of the entire B Vitamin complex. Had one this morning before I started working, I'm not crashing, still going strong.

Except that coffee isn't marketed as providing energy and having all sorts of other properties that it doesn't really have.

Who gives a sh!t? Anyone with half a brain knows it does the same thing as coffee anyways.
It's a flavored caffeine drink that wakes you up in the morning...in fact dude, coffee DOES give you a burst of energy, why the hell else would people drink it in the morning?
I haven't met a single person who thinks energy drinks are actually dietary supplements....you'd have to be retarded to think that.

I don't really give a sh!t, but it's the definition of a scam. And of course people believe the marketing, otherwise why did they catch on when regular soft drinks already existed?

The definition of scam is advertising something to do things greater than it actually does? So basically like every other advertisement in history?
Regular soft drinks don't have nearly enough caffeine in them to be considered in the same realm as energy drinks.
It DOES give energy, therefore 'energy drink' is the correct nomenclature for such a beverage. Coffee also gives you energy.
I HATE all other energy drinks because of the massive amount of HFCS in them, but Rockstar Juiced is leagues beyond the others in terms of actual ingredients. Like I said, Snapple has less juice in it than Juiced RS.
I understand you have some sort of huge problem with the energy drink business, god knows why. If you don't like em dont drink em. But calling it a scam is an overstatement.

Monster or 5 hour. I prefer the taste of Monster far more than Rockstar. If you don't want the sugar use the Low Carb(Splenda) version. 3 grams per serving instead of 27. My cardiologist won't let me drink Monster anymore.

5 hour energy

I'd say "scam" is a fair characterization when the marketing makes health-related claims that have not been proven. I've never seen coffee marketing that does that, nor have I seen coffee with the kinds of ingredients that these energy drinks include.
I've never given them that much thought and I'm not interested in drinking them, but I hang out with a lot of medicine/health science people, who universally see them as stupid and not healthy, despite being popular among certain segments of the population that fit the target markets for these things.
You drink them, that's fine it doesn't bother me in any way. You don't have to be defensive about it. I buy stuff and eat and drink stuff that I probably shouldn't as well, and I'm sure I buy into bogus marketing. I'm an Apple user after all.

It is a scam, and the FDA is finally cracking down on companies like Centrum, Airborn, etc. There are ZERO conclusive studies that show that taking a daily multi-vitamin has any positive affect on the body.
There are only specific occasions where supplements are provided by a doctor, and it usually has to deal with post/pre pregnancy, post/pre cancer treatment, menopause, or any other change to the body where it may be sufficiently lacking (or no longer producing/processing) certain proteins and/or vitamins.
There's this misconception that just because 60 micrograms of vitamin B12 is good for you, that obviously taking eight times the recommended dosage is somehow better for you. Your body needs arsenic, but taking too much will kill you.

Don't waste your money on energy drinks. Get a pack of caffeine pills and take the equivalent dose. Take a B Vitamin complex, stay hydrated, eat small meals every two to three hours, and work in an occasional short nap. That isn't going to keep you going for 4 days straight, but you'll be up longer than normal.
If you know a good chemist, have him synth up some quality amphetamine. You won't miss a single note.

Canadian made, ridiculous amounts of caffeine and guarana. Great for the mid-afternoon when you've had 4 hours of sleep but need to keep driving your 5-ton truck.

Btw, I always get a kick out of how these things market themselves as health products. Isn't that some sort of oxymoron?

What? The word health product? False advertising it might be, but I don't think oxymoron means what you think it means.
