It's entirely possible that I made this up, or at the very least got it wrong or remember it incorrectly. But I seem to remember reading once upon a time that the guy who posted photos of all the pages in the last Harry Potter book ended up getting busted because someone pulled his camera's serial number out of the metadata of the photos.
The reason I ask is that my friend's junkie brother stole her new digital camera and she was able to find it at a local pawn shop. The owner agreed to pull it from sale while she gets this resolved, but she doesn't have the serial number from the camera. So I was wondering if it might be possible to get the number from the metadata in any of the pics I have that she took with this camera. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Apparently, it depends on the file. I just opened Adobe Bridge CS3 and checked a RAW image from my Canon 30D, and to my surprise, the serial number was right there in the meta list.
But jpgs’ from the same file and jpgs’ from older cameras didn’t show a serial number.

If she kept the box, my camera boxes all had the serial number printed on them. It may be on her purchase receipt too.

She has the box, but said there isn't a serial # on it. I'll take a look at it myself tomorrow and double check.
I opened the images in photoshop, and I just never noticed before that all the metadata info was right there in front of me. Unfortunately, under the camera info the brand and model are listed, but the serial # field is blank. Maybe that's a jpeg thing?

When it's on the box, it could be a separate sticker, or the # may be printed near the UPC.
If it's not on the box or receipt, check the owners manual or the warranty card (if you still have that). The serial number is sometimes pre-filled in. Also, she may have written it on either document per the instructions. If she sent the warranty card in, you may be able to get the serial # from the manufacturer.
Oh, and call the cops. Junkie brother needs to learn to steal digital cameras from strangers only.
