<whine>
Last week my 17" PowerBook G4 AND my iPhone were stolen. 3 days later, my partner trashed his MacBook by dumping a full glass of water all over it.

What a complete pain in the ass!

That's all... just needed to whine.

That's terrible. Were they stolen from you home? car? work?

I'm so paranoid about my MB Pro getting pinched that take it everywhere. It's not just the hardware, in fact, I almost don't care about that. It's the iPhoto library, baby photos of my daughter, personal information, writing, music. It'd be like losing a piece of myself, a huge chunk of my past.

Did you have the Vault thingy on? How does that work anyway? There'd be some solace in knowing that identity fraud is not going to be added to theft of property.

Major flooding: I-70, I-65 closed | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

... there have been no reports of injuries from the flooding that followed more than 9 inches of rain in some places.

Daniels said floodwaters could begin to subside in a few hours – but then rise again if rain falls to the north.

Time Machine.

Two days ago my HD started making chirping/whistling noises. Took it in for a repair. Two hours later it was fixed.* Hard drive replaced. An hour and a half after that I'd restored the HD using TIme Machine and was back on my merry way.

No rain here.

*MacWorx in Joondalup (Perth). Excellent service.

From what I've heard, central Iowa has had some pretty severe flooding as well...many of the main roads in Ames as well as the interstate were closed down.

Is AT&T able to track down your iPhone? All they have to do is triangulate it's location.

Only Police can have this done if it's anything like Sprint. (Plus, the pseudo GPS isn't accurate enough).

Back up already. Data loss isn't an if it happens, it's a when it happens.

Police are all but useless in Sint Maarten.

Really? You mean hardware failure? Even on a Mac?

I have a external HD that I refresh now and again, but I'm pretty lazy about it. I like the idea of having an .Mac account, but resent the subscription fee. I use a gmail folder to back up all my texts and try to post all my pics to a blog.

Data loss is a scary prospect, but ultimately, I think personal data is safer in the age of digital reproduction. There is no "retrieval process" if you lose a photo album or file cabinet or journal in a fire.

Having said that, I'm gonna go connect my external HD.

Time machine saved my bacon once already. Otherwise, mozy.com gives you unlimited offsite backup for $5.00 a month. Can't complain about that.

You guys have motivated me to stop ignoring the "Time Machine has not backed up on X days" warning.
