If Apple wasn't in dire need of marketshare penetration, a switch to CELL would have been the next logical move.

CELL as a genral perpose processor is not a good idea. A CELL coprocessor (for encoding/decoding/transcoding video) in an Intel Mac would be very cool. I could maybe see this happening in Snow Leopard [read, OpenCL].

No; Cell makes a terrible desktop processor.
I wonder if OpenCL will work with the PCIe Cell cards.

Isn't Cell the processor under the hood of the PS3?

Cats clarified what I meant. You'd have the G5 with several CELL coprocessors.

The CELL is, but Roadrunner is Athlons with CELL 2 coprocessors. The CELL 2 is leaps and bounds better than the CELL.

So what was all that distraction about marketshare and a "switch"?

Fixed. Can I get a link to the CELL 2 spec page, or some sort of press release?

I'm guessing from the name that it's 2x better.
When can I get my hands on a PowerBook C2?

I don't think the CELL 2 exists, IBM's website doesn't mention anything about CELL 2.
