So Mr. Jobs announces the 8G iPhone at $200. Guess how much we have to pay in France.
400 F * * K I N G Euros.
Over $600.

Until I see the price on Apple's sit I'd be skeptical. But isn't the $200 price due to AT&T subsidizing it in the US?

Hmm I'm not sure what Telefónica is going to make me pay.. isn't the iPhone unlocked in France by the way? If so, that's worth paying more for!

I agree with Paul. I would wait a little longer just to make sure these aren't rumors or false information floating around.

I myself would pay more for an unlocked iPhone!

I saw that (crappy flash site) but is it something they've recently updated or has that been there since before the keynote? No mention of the new 3G iPhone, the back, the colors anything.
Anyway, did Steve actually say it'd be available worldwide for $200???

Dude.
Look. At. The. Graphic.
That's an old iPhone.
Orange has posted no info on the new one so far, and Steve DID say $199 *MAXIMUM*, worldwide.

Well I'm sorry, but I don't see the large differences that you guys see between the images here : Apple - iPhone - Features and what I posted above.
Maybe I need to clean my glasses.
Anyway, Orange are STILL barstewards.
"Steve DID say $199 *MAXIMUM*, worldwide."
Is that in the keynote? I haven't seen it yet. I HOPE HOPE HOPE thats what happens.

a) it's in the keynote.
b) I can see black volume buttons, a metal back, and a black plastic bottom-end. Not that hard to make out, and a pretty stark contrast from metal buttons and a unified white or black back.
And ALL telecoms companies are barstewards. ALL of them. No exceptions.
Why the hell bother complaining about Orange, specifically?

Heh, in Belgium it's probably going to be +450€ so there..
We've been scratched of the "available on the 11th of July" list as well. Thanks Orange/Mobistar/Apple. Well actually thanks Belgian consumer law but whatever. They knew that in advance.

1h40m15s (Keynote video podcast version): "in almost every one of these countries the price is maximum of $199".
"Almost" is the keyword here.
And he was mentioning these "almost $199" only within the first 22 countries to get the iPhone 3G, by the way.

Is it locked? What's the unlocked price (which France requires, IIRC)?
What's the rebate for signing up for a 1.5-2 year contract? 250 euro?

It's A$220 and A$330 down here apparently (with 2 year $79/m lock in plans). This corresponds pretty much exact to the US prices.

The iPhone is country-locked in France. You can put any SIM into it, as long as it comes from a French carrier.

So no activation or contract is required?
I think I know where my 3G iPhone will come from...

The Belgian one will be completely unlocked.. No contract, no country-specific sim lock. Unless Apple figures out a way to change our law

My provider is also Orange… in Spain. That makes it worse cause I don't want to have to deal with Telefónica ever again, I could easily switch to Vodafone but Telefónica?, no way.

Guys, keep in mind that iPhones will also be available unlocked, not only. The low prices (Orange FR has just announced iPhones 3G will be 99/199 Euros for 8/16 GB, respectively) are only for the sim-locked phones.

$199 maximum, that would be €128 or £101.
Personally, I find it hard to imagine them selling the thing at these prices, Apple products have always cost considerably more in Europe than in the US.
If do actually sell it at that price, and I really hope they will, Sony/Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, etc. may as well close down their mobile phone businesses, I don’t see how they can hope to compete.

Question is whether or not that includes/requires a contract.
We all know that it will be possible to remove the sim-lock from 3G iPhones just a few days after 2.0 is released.
That's why I personally don't care about the sim-lock as long as I get my hands on the phone itself... without a 2 year / 1400€ contract attached to it.
I'd pay up to 500€ for plain-vanilla 16G iPhone without a sim- or country-lock and activation (if it turns out that there's no other way to use one with my carrier).

The low priced Orange FR iPhones obviously require a contract - from Eur 45/month upwards, minimum 18 mths running rime.
On the funny side - I've ordered an 8GB iPhone 3G from a respected Polish web-store yesterday. Price is roughly Eur 250, guaranteed, with payment on delivery - July 25th. This will be an US iPhone, locked to AT&T. Don't ask me how on Earth are they going to get it, I don't know.

These aren't the prices for the 3G phone.
The Orange site is a clusterf**k; in one place they have one price and in another place a vastly different price. The prices above are for the old phones.
Can't remember the price but it was something like 700€ to buy the first gen iPhone in France (officially) without an Orange contract.
Think that I'll go to Belgium as well.

iPhones have been selling for €99 with 24-month T-Mobile contract in Germany for some time now.
And O2 Britain has already announced that they will include an iPhone 8GB FREE with their second-best data plan, and an iPhone 16GB free with the top plan.
