I'm considering getting an a new Home Theater class receiver and the Onkyo TX-SR606 is looking like the hands down winner as it has what I'm looking for (HDMI with analog to HDMI capability which I want to simplify cabling purposes) and spec wise it is on par with my current Yamaha (90w) which I've been very happy with.
However, I've never really heard of Onkyo before and am curious where they lie in terms of reputation, how are they compared to Yamaha.

I have an Onkyo receiver and it works great. I've had it for about a year. To get the same features in another brand, I would have had to pay twice as much.
I don't know much about the brand, but they get recommended often by people who seem to know what they are talking about. That's why I bough mine.

Onkyo has a good price/performance compared to other companies. If you are not an audiophile and you don't like to pay for a name, this company makes good products. I've bought my parents an Onkyo receiver for Christmas and it has performed without a hitch.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

When I was living with a flat mate we had an Onkyo receiver and now that I'm living with my wife we bought the Onkyo home theater in a box and are very happy with it.
We bought ours about two years ago and it's still going strong. I would like to replace the receiver one day with something with HDMI though.

I've been using a cheaper Onkyo receiver ( TX-SR573) as my "office stereo" for about 2 years and have been quite happy with it. There's only two quibbles I've had with it ... 1) the remote is hideously large, clunky and heavy (doesn't bother me since I never use it), and 2) the top of the unit gets very, very hot; doesn't bother me either since the unit's free-standing but I would never put another component (DVD player, cable box, etc.) on top of it.
Overall, good stuff for small money.
