I never really got into Second Life, but this seems akin to it. Though, the article compares it to Home by Sony.

I applied for a job at Google and sadly did not get it. Perhaps another time, as I would love to work there.

Google is like the dude who hits a jackpot in Vegas and goes on a shopping spree. He buys crap he doesn't need and will never use but he has the cash to do so and so it's his.

Google lets all their employees spend 30% or so of their time on "side projects" not part of their daily work schedule. Gmail, Lively, GWT, and quite a few other nice tools have resulted from this freedom.

Nothing wrong with what Google is doing, they simply understand the benefits and virtues of a creative work culture, as does Pixar and presumably Apple as well.
