I haven't been excited about a non-Apple computer for quite some time. This was one of my computer predictions years back, but I thought Apple was going to be the one to make the move. Looks like it's Toshiba, but I'm hoping the technology will catch on for other computers.

Using the Cell coprocessors (4-SPUs), you can transcode a 1GB movie in 10 minutes.

Does the software know what to do with it or is this just brute force?

Toshiba's software does, yes. They were one of the co-creators of the Cell, along with IBM and Sony. IBM provides extensive documentation, APIs, etc. for developing software for the Cell processors.

Toshiba claims to be the innovator of many things: cd drive, dvd drive, etc.

I saw an ad in a game magazine recently that said such. Innovative, perhaps. True, perhaps.

How does a Cell based laptop run Windows? I thought cell processors were essentially PPCs.

Or does "cell" mean something else now?

"Cell-based" is really misleading. "Cell-enhanced" would be more correct.

I think the extra cell processor is pretty useless, since no software but the bundled Toshiba apps will ever make use of it. An extra Core2Duo inside would make much more sense.

Well, it's half a Cell. Toshiba's only uses the SPEs, not the PPE. Since the PPE is PowerPC based, Toshiba had to develop their own controller for the SPEs which they call the SpursEngine (or Quad Core HD Processor.)

Unfortunately it's proprietary, but I don't see why IBM, Sony, and Toshiba wouldn't license it. They'd make a lot of money sticking Cell technology into every desktop and laptop.

Here're some Wikis on Cell and Spurs.
