Hey, over here! We're over here!
An estimated 125,000 Western lowland gorillas are living in a swamp in equatorial Africa, researchers reported Tuesday, double the number of the endangered primates thought to survive worldwide.

So, how do you undercount such a high profile endangered species?

Do you realize how much of equatorial Africa is a long way from roads, towns, research stations etc? There are huge tracts where no-one who is publishing has really spent any time.

I think its a good thing that people aren't in every corner of the globe, and can miss things such as this. I'm sure that played a large part in these gorillas thriving like they did.
Damn dirty humans.

The same way you just almost miss discovering the world's smallest snake (you blink).

Too bad they gave directions on how to find the Gorillas in the article... they'll have to count again next year now to see how many got killed because of the article.

One species has higher numbers but the report also says that many more are in danger, some more perilously than previously thought.

We need an eco-tourism company that loans you a bite-proof gorilla suit and drops you into gorilla country.

Is there some special reason people want to kill these gorillas?

I wouldn't be interested in the "life force" of a being that would be so easy to kill.
Kinda like "lucky" rabbits' feet (not for the rabbit).
And a to the POTA reference.
