Core i7? That's some name they've got there. One immediately thinks perhaps of it being the 7th Intel processor family generation. (P4, P5 i.e. Core Duo, P6 Core2Duo, i7), and I suppose the i stands for intel. According to the article, "Intel told us that “i7” was simply chosen because it is “short and sweet”. I think the i in the name is dumb, but perhaps there's a method to it.

Slightly better than the Core Duo / Core2Duo confusion I guess. Meh.

Instead of thinking that it was the 7th generation I thought it was because it had 7 cores.

I originally thought it said "17", so I had no clue what it referred to.

I thought someone couldn’t spell ‘IE7’, which didn’t give a favourable first impression of Intel’s newest baby.

Lamet name ever. Better than Intel Quad Core 2 Duo i7 Extreme. The black logo costs extra.

I guess they realized that incrementing the 2 in Core2 to Core3 and so on would just cause confusion. But you'd think they could come up with something a bit better than i7. Intel has never been known for very good product names.

"Nehalem" would've been perfect.

How's Core i7 Duo any better than those?

I wouldn't say better, but unless they release CoreSepto i7 as well, there won't be any of the "which one is newer/2 duo..wtf?" type of misunderstandings.

Actually, you already did.

Well, there'll have to be a Duo and Quad version of it, for sure. There'll probably also be a Solo, so there you have Core i7 Solo, Core i7 Duo, and Core i7 Quad (and maybe something like Core i7 Octo, etc. if they add more cores). If they decide to move things around a bit, it might be Core Solo i7, Core Duo i7, etc. Unless I'm missing something, it'd have to be almost exactly the same as now.

I do not really like how many companies are jumping on the 'iProduct Name' bandwagon.

Should they be referred to as iNtel now?

iCore?

Is it me, or are the backgrounds reminiscent of the old Aqua desktops?

It isn't, but as I read it, we won't see Core i7 Duo. The name will be Core i7, and all i7 will be quads (and, as I understand it, LGA1366). Core i5 or whatever will be quads but with the basic LGA1160 socket, Core i3 will be duals with integrated graphics etc.

Well, I am... but know that Nehalem-derived mobile CPUs won't be out until spring at the earliest. A refresh ought to be due soon in any case though.

Heh. Ironically, I'm selling my Core Duo MacBook shortly... and will just be using a G4 800 iBook for the time being.

Maybe I'll pick up another laptop when Blu-ray gets incorporated. It seems these days the CPU is becoming less and less important. While I agree a G4 800 is too slow, for the vast majority of population the CPU really shouldn't be the primary concern. That was true in the past to a certain extent, but it's even more true now.

Mind you, I'd love to have a quad-core Nehalem iMac in the near future.
