Did anyone see the one relay (or whatever the proper term is) where at one point 4 of the swimmers were ahead of the WR line? It was incredible.

They actually had a think on the news about why he's so good. He's 6'4" tall, but has the torso and wingspan of someone who's 6'8", the legs of someone who's 5'8", and size 14 feet. That combination allows him very efficient kicking and incredible upper body strength. Plus he apparently doesn't produce as much lactic acid as the average athlete allowing him much better recovery times.

I'm not trying to take anything away from him, but it's also a subtle reminder that so much rides on the luck of nature.
I seem to recall something about Lance Armstrong having some type vein or artery (or something else altogether) that was 3 times larger than the average person, and this was attributed to his enhanced stamina.

According to the "experts" commenting on NBC, if someone could engineer the PERFECT swimming body, it would look like Phelps. Having short legs and a long torso is beneficial (I forget why they said it was). 6' 4", size 14 feet, SEVEN foot wingspan, and he's double jointed in his ankles and knees. He was made to swim and he's proving it in these (and the last) Olympics. It's really quite amazing to watch how completely dominating he his.

his proportions can most likely be attributed to the fact that he has been swimming/training for pretty much his entire life. having a wingspan a few inches greater than your height is not that uncommon, just look at basketball players. in fact, professional swimmers have difficulty in competing in contact sports or sports that require greater agility and quickness because their joints are so loose from constantly being stretched and contracted from swimming in water.

thus his arms are longer than his legs, which makes the ratio between the two out of whack (disproportionate).
so actually, swimming does cause him to have what appears to be legs that are "too short"

Nope. He actually has the torso of a man that's 6'8" and the legs of a man that's 5'8". There's nothing about swimming that did that to him, and it's nothing about how he "looks," it's about the actual measurements of his body.
