I just saw for the first time the new Mac Guy commercial in which PC Guy says he isn't worried about the superior Mac operating system because most people will find it too difficult to switch to Macs, which means PC Guy will still be king. To that Mac Guy retorts that PC owners can buy Macs, bring their PCs in and have Mac Geniuses transfer their files over for free.
I think it's an interesting offer, but what if the Geniuses find users have a number of file types on their PCs that don't have standard out of the box Mac compatible applications? What if they have to tell the PC users that corresponding Mac applications have to be bought for compatibility with those files, or worse that there are no corresponding Mac apps available in certain cases? I wonder how much thought went into the announcement of this service.

Genius Bars have been offering this for forever. I'm sure they have the kinks worked out by now.

I would be surprised if they didn't just transfer the files and let the user worry about compatibility. There are too many possible file types for them to realistically address each one.

They'll only move files for free if you first put them in a folder on the PC desktop, and label it "transfers," and then those files will go on a desktop folder on the new Mac. Other file transfers come with a fee, or are included as part of the One-to-One training service Apple offers. This has been like this for quite some time.

I assumed it was in reference to Boot Camp.

Correct. They'll move the basics, like documents, movies, pics, and music but that's about it.
