What have been the top events for lesbians in 2008?

Lesbians had it all ..... in 2006. In 2006, a lesbian won Wimbledon, Rosie O'Donnell joined The View, and Chinese lesbian Qiao Qiao released the country's first ever lesbian music video, "Love Does Not Discriminate". The only bad event for lesbians in 2006 was that Oprah officially denied having an affair with Gayle King.

But I get the feeling that lesbians hit a dry spell in 2007 from which they have yet to recover. What has happened? Surely there have been some lesbian events in the past year that are worth reporting, though I should hardly think that Elizabeth Berkley's signing onto the new season of The L-Word is enough lesbian goodness to carry lesbians through the whole year. They need more substantive events this year.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia Rossi got hitched and want to have babies?

Can’t say I can really think of other lesbian events from 2008—which, I guess, makes 2008 as much of a dry spell as 2007 was.

I was going to say, the superfab wedding on the cover of People magazine was a big deal.
I read some opinion piece suggesting that that magazine cover might singlehandedly ensure the defeat of the anti-gay-marriage proposition in California.

Also, don't forget Gro Hammersung and Katja Nyberg, out lesbian couple, Norwegian handball players, and Olympic gold medalists!

Well, they’re not really an event of 2008, are they? They’ve been both out and together since well before 2008, and they didn’t win the medal, their team did. (There were four other lesbian athletes who won medals at the Beijing Olympics, I think. Only one or two of the attending [openly] gay athletes left without a medal.)

As for lesbian handball players … used to be Camilla Andersen (DK) and Mia Hundvin (N), now it’s Gro and Katja. There’s a bit of ‘passing on the torch’ kind of feeling to it, almost.

Are there a lot of out Olympians? I know that Mitcham (sp?) guy has a boyfriend. But of course, let's not let the men steal the spotlight, this thread is about lesbians.

Lesbians need to get on the ball (no pun intended). Who is going to inspire the younger generation of gay women? It won't be Ellen and Rosie, they're old hat. Imagine if Lindsay Lohan cleaned up her act and fessed up to having that girlfriend, and became a 20-something clean cut lesbian role model. That would be the top lesbian event of 08.

I believe there were, all in all, eleven out Olympians in Beijing this year: Mitcham, and ten bi or lesbian female athletes. Of those eleven, seven won medals: Mitcham, the Norwegian girls (gold), Natasha Kai (US footballer, gold), Vicky Galindo and Lauren Lappin (US softballers, silver), and Linda Bresonik (Germany, football, bronze).

(Yes, I had to look up the names)

What a statement about how far this whole thing still has to go. First, you've got to reach the point of critical mass for acceptance, then get true acceptance, then we can forget the whole thing move on to the fact that it doesn't matter if someone is straight or gay. Judging by the historical timeline for blacks and women, I'd guess it's 20-40 years in the US. I have little knowledge of Europe.

Isn't that kind of superfluous at this point? How anticlimactic it must be to come out to the world and have the world reply, "Well...yeah, we just kind of always assumed."

It was only just past noon—practically in the middle of the night for me. I must have been tired.

(Yes, it’s just before noon now, and yes, I’m tired as all bloody hell!)

I sure spoke too soon: this seems to be the year of strong women in high places.

[ahead of Olbermann and King in ratings]

Oh yea, and Lindsay Lohan is getting married after all. I should have never underestimated the lesbianicity of 2008.
