Look, I'm not accusing the Japanese of nepotism or cronyism, but how did Luigi get that job next to Mario? They are both Italian-Americans, which makes me wonder if they are related in some way. What is real the backstory? The problem that I see is that there is no way someone that lame could be placed next to Mario unless they were related, and yet I do not see how that bumbling fool could be kin to Mario, who basically owns the whole act.
Frankly I just don't buy the idea myself. Luigi is too incompetent. I think the rumors that they are brothers is false.

Mario Mario
Luigi Mario
They're the Mario Brothers.
That kind of explains things.

or mario has no first name and it just "mario" like ..."mclovin" or "lassie" or "prince" (all of those are horrible examples)

My explanation above can be used, and that's why they have the same last name.

Two men having the same last name doesn't always mean they're brothers

But when they’re collectively known as “the [Last Name] Brothers”, there’s a fair chance they are.
Also, according to Wikipedia:

Yoshi the dinosaur is another one of Mario's closest friends.

Yes, he is their evil cousin.
As where the Brothers went into the respectable trade of plumbing, Wario opened a German themed restaurant chain around Sicily in the 1940's
After the war, the chain became very unpopular and he stole and sold off the Mario family fortune.

I guess you haven't played one of the best arcade games of all time.
P.S. Luigi is just as capable a plumber as Mario.

I had that Mario come try to fix a leak in our hot water system. All he did was run up and down the kitchen, jump up and down on the cat repeatedly (it's still in trauma) before running out of the door. I phoned the company to complain so they sent his brother round to clear up the mess.
Don't get me started on how THAT turned out.
