Woman locked in cabin for 9 years

The man, who denied all charges, was suspected of having kept his common-law wife imprisoned since 1999 in a cabin measuring 15 square meters in a small community near the town of Eksjo.

The woman, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, weighed less than 40 kilos (88 pounds) when she was admitted to hospital earlier this week, Swedish television channel SVT reported on its website.

At least (reading a bit more about it on svt.se) this time around it seems it was ‘just’ unlawful imprisonment, not the whole sicko violence-rape-torture thing. Apparently, other people in the community did know they were two people living there and had even met them socially from time to time.

On the other hand, it seems the owner of the camp site where they lived reported the husband to the police nine months ago, after having seen the man hit his wife with a cane. Apparently, he got a call from the police not long ago saying that they’d finally got through the piles of reports and were now coming to his, and that’s what led them to arrest the man. The owner of the camp site had also from time to time managed to lure away the husband in order to talk to the very weak wife alone to see if she was okay.

F*cked up, altogether.

A twist: my best friend is from Eksjö where this took place, and has worked at at least two or three camp sites over the summers there.
