The thread on vinyl's resurgence here has me interested in building a cabinet for a record player. Anyone have plans or does anyone remember what these used to look like? If I remember correctly, the one may father had was about 3 feet high, and very long with the record player in the middle. Anyone have photos of one of these?

Why would you want a cabinet, out of mild curiousity?
I mean, to me it's a very old-fashioned look. The trend now seems to be to put the record player on full display (especially if you've blown 5 gees on one, like Shaddim. ). It seems to be an after-the-fact recognition that these audio systems were works of art unto themselves.
I love going into nice audio stores and seeing how dynamite everything looks when it's set up to be displayed to people....

Edit: This is one I saw recently in a store, and I really liked the concept at least. Receiver/CDplayer/Turntable, nice and clean, against the wall, everything on beautiful display (again, it would look amazing with Shaddim's work of art!).

Why a cabinet? Simple: To help keep dust out of your electronics. Those designer record players are fun to jack off to, but I'm not laying any record of mine on a table that doesn't have a cover.

Cabinets also keep pets and visitors from messing with your electronics, allow you to manage cabling more effectively, and avoid the issue of "trendiness." While I expect that when I go from my CRT-based TV to a flat panel some time in the next year or two I will replace my cabinet-style stereo/CD/DVD/etc. enclosure with something I can put my TV on top of instead of inside of, I will still want something that keeps those boxes from attracting dust, kittens, and the occasional friend's frosty drink glass.

That's different. You're talking about a turntable cover. He's talking about a cabinet in which to put the turntable.
For example, I like having my Beogram 5005 on display, but it still has its lid.

I'm thinking of a cabinet because I still have the player from my father's old cabinet. It doesn't stand alone, but needs to be mounted into something to work correctly. Thus, I'm looking for something to build. I'm all for updating the style if anyone has ideas.
