I'm looking at starting a news blog with a friend, where we simply link and quote lots of news stories that are happy....
We were wondering about copyright - could we be sued? Or do blogs fall under the realm of fair use? What about images? Better to hotlink from their servers or resize to a smaller scale and host ourselves?

I think at the very least if its news stories you need to reference where it originated. Just look at how other sites do it, and they always mention publishing site.

"Happy"?
"Everything's so clear to me now: I'm the keeper of the cheese and you're the lemon merchant. Get it? And he knows it.
That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it. Yeah. Before he let's loose the marmosets on us."

I'd love "happy" news, but some people are "happier" when they are miserable. Just look at the feeding frenzy of the pol lounge.

I don't envy your having to read all the news just to glean off a few happy stories. Do you know how much poop you're going to have to wade through to get to the happy stuff?

Also, copyright. I believe you'd be in breach of it. Unfortunately.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure it depends on what you mean by "quote." If you're just taking their stories and republishing them on your site, yeah, they could throw copyright in your face. If we're talking about a representative snippet from the story with a link to the full version on their site, I think you'd be on the side of angels. In fact, that's a very common format for blogs, and I don't think anyone's ever like, "No, don't tell them about this awesome piece I wrote!"

I once met a girl that sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away

Ahhh. It's in grey on the page, like the rest of the sidebar text. I likes my RSS feeds in orange!

Nowt showed in the usual spot (right of address bar) in my Safari.

Why on earth [pun intended!] would they be wearing Irish footwear a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, anyway?
