I'm getting a "This site is temporarily unavailable" message, but it could be because it automatically takes me to the mobile version of the site.

I think Ben and jerry took PETA seriously.

Simple explanation: This is just a picture for the advertising of a breast milk pump and the company wants to show you how hip you can be while you do two things and pump breast milk for the child you don't have enough time for because you are being so hip and having a career that doesn't allow you to give your breast milk directly from the source.

Actually, there is (or used to be?) a rule that says, “Don’t post and run”; i.e., don’t post a link to an article or a funny without some explanation of what it’s about or your own opinion. Not sure if it only goes for the PolWar Lounge or not (and I’m far too lazy and childish to actually check), but it’s a good rule for the regular Lounge, too.

Yeah, I concur. Maybe he can explain what the heck is a lactation consultant (as mentioned in Eug's post). Do women really need consultants to learn/understand how to breast-feed a baby? Haven't they been doing that for like thousands of generations?

OT:

Come on people. Yes, breastfeeding and milking and all else is a perfectly human and natural process but if you can't see the funny in that picture, you need to look at it a bit harder.

I remember being in the town of Woodstock, NY some time ago.
Some hairy hippie woman flopped her boob out to feed her baby.
I almost puked.

This new method - combined with new 21st century hygiene - makes it somewhat more palatable.

Uhh, yes. And? Breastfeeding is quite a normal thing to do for recent mothers, you know—even if they’re outside. If you’re being sarcasting with all this, please ignore this and my previous post

It was the first (and only time) in my life that I've seen a woman feeding in broad daylight and in a crowded square no less.

Of course it's a natural thing - so is pooping and peeing, yet we don't normally do this in public.

^or anyplace.

restaurants, movie theaters, conference halls, malls, stores, nail salon, work, home, outside, inside. Anywhere. You just haven't been paying attention. If done correctly, breastfeeding in public is no more indiscrete than a bathing suit on a beach. Which reminds me, beach.

Yes, that picture is goofy, mainly because it makes pumping look pleasant and enjoyable, which it is not. Although I'm sure that hands-free bra is helping, so I guess the ad is working better than microsoft's ads.

... unless we’re besson3c, of course.

I see your point, though. It’s all social tradition. The first (and second, and many subsequent) times I saw a mother letting her little kid take a dump in the middle of the street in China, I was pretty flummoxed and grossed out, too. The whole concept of the asscrack-baby-pants still creeps me out. So point taken.

(I think taking food in is a bit less universally frowned upon than getting it back out is, though)

They still do that in China, at least last year in Beijing. I'm with you on that one.

You are correct about the in - out part. It is conditioning aka social tradition...
But then, isn't everything? In Japan most people's homes are quite sterile and they are a very clean people, yet clipping your toenails in public is perfectly acceptable.

And yet, oddly, eating is not. Just shows how relatively arbitrary the creation of social-stigmatic dichotomies is, when it comes down to it.

What is so gross about a woman breast-feeding a child? It's a normal process to feed the baby and, unless the mother is being deliberately provocative, generally a discreet process as well.

Yes, what is in the pipe* or are you simply employing the metaphor of the wisened and distinguished older man making pronouncements on a matter from his smoking chair?

*I have been an avid pipe smoker for almost 13 years now and always like to hear about what others smoke. I have 14 different pipes but I stick to a handful of the same tobaccos, mostly Burley, Virginia, some Latakia, toasted Cavendish, and the infrequent Perique blend.

I thought it was a subtle (a bit too subtle, perhaps, since no one seems to really understand it) comment on the arbitrariness of the social acceptance or non-acceptance (and change in the same) of smoking, especially pipe-smoking.

OK, what's going on in here boys?

Oh. You want me to explain some things. Okey dokey then.

Hippy chicks: Should never be allowed out in public until they learn how to become proper people, shave their armpits and slap some Maybelline on. End of discussion.

Breast feeding in public: Should be illegal. I mean, those puppies are for me, not some unappreciative baby. It makes me mad, I tell you, women folks abusing their boobies in such a manner. Haven't they heard of formula and bottles? Think of all the sag. Which I suppose they'll correct with bits of Lego inserted in there so they just don't bounce properly anymore. It's just not right I tell you. Damn babies - get your own bleedin' toys... ...and learn to speak properly instead of all those stupid "ga ga" noises you make, you retards.

The original pic: If someone hadn't have explained all that I would have sworn it was some new-fangled device to lure Uncle Doof into the perverse world of phone sex. Reasonable chick (thinks she stands a chance) - check. MacBook to impress Uncle Doof - check. Practising smiling whilst on the phone so her tone of voice comes across better when she finally works up the courage to phone Uncle Doof - check.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Don't forget the smoking jacket. But yes, I was just having some fun with this metaphor.

I've tried a few varieties (can't recall which) - I soon realized that I enjoy the smell more than the taste.

Is that really an arbitrary difference? Touching someone else's poo, which is filled with nasty bacteria, is a great way to get sick; not so with food, including breast milk.

Fair enough. Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my criticism. Sorry!

PS: Keep smoking the pipe. I am getting tired of trying to start up the trend again myself.
(I started smoking a pipe when I was 25. Do you know what kind of strange looks a 20- or 30-something pipe smoker gets. Although, by this point I have become so indifferent to what others think (about everything, not just pipe smoking) that if someone were to come right up to me and mock me for smoking the pipe my reaction would be "meh".)

I guess you'd be surprised at the very desperate need women have for Lactation Consultants. The Le Leche League is also a source of information for new mothers. A LC was indispensable to my wife for our first born. A LLL woman also helped out a lot with our second child. Some women don't need help, some women have a difficult time.

I really don't understand the need for such a person. If you don't mind sharing, what did the LC do for your wife?
