I have about 4500 songs in my iTunes library on my MacBook. What's the beat way to play them through my stereo receiver? Airport express? Apple tv? Plug MacBook into receiver? I want to be able to control everything with a harmony remote.

With the Harmony Remote you'll either control and AppleTV or your Mac (which is pushing audio to the Airport Express). On the Harmony Remote side of things you add an AppleTV which pushes the same commands as the white Apple remote, thus also controlling your Mac.
I have had both and prefer the AppleTV since you can see everything on your TV and you get the added benefit of having an AppleTV.

With the iPhone and iPod touch you can download Apple's free Remote app from the iTunes App Store which will control a Mac or AppleTV's music.

I use an Airport Express and it works great. If you have the cash, I'd also recommend an Apple TV. It does the same as the Express and does some nifty things for TV. There are some really cool Apple TV plugins and hacks that allow you to use the Apple TV more like a computer, including installing Web Browsers like Firefox and Safari right on to the Apple TV with very little effort.

There are also BitTorrent clients and Hulu.com interfaces for Apple TV so you an download and watch your favorite TV shows with little or no commercial interruption.

If you like the cheap way (like me)

Couple of bucks at Radio Shack, that is, if you don't mind setting your Macbook next to the stereo.

I usually hack into peoples' private MySpace pages and go from there.

My vote is for AppleTV. Not only does it maintain a library within its own hard drive, it can pull from iTunes on another computer on your network, and you can also push audio to it using AirTunes à la AirPort Express.

(I have an AppleTV and two AirPort Expresses.)

This one.

If you have an iPhone/iPod Touch, you can use the remote application and it's even cooler (I know you want to use your harmony remote, which you can, but Apple's remote.app is bottled awesome).

Yeah, I’d say the AppleTV in combination with the iPhone remote is hard to beat. That is unless you already have a desktop mac running 24/7 in which case I’d suggest the Airport Express.

I'm cheap, err, careful with money too.
This cable works with everything, if you don't mind the lack of video.

Yeah, that's the joke that was already made at your expense.
