I recently got a really nice card from one of my dearest professors whom I haven't spoken to in a while, and I want to write back to him. I would think a card in return would be the proper thing to send. However, I don't have all that much love for my penmanship - it's not the worst by any means, but it's not all that good, either. The other alternative, typing out a letter, printing it on normal paper and stuffing it in an envelope, seems too impersonal. Perhaps I should just write a card out long hand - he's graded my blue book essays so he's seen my penmanship. I suppose I could just call or email instead. What would you do?

I would write it out in long hand, but I would take extra time to make it legible. A typewritten note is not as well received. Look at it this way, everyone has different handwriting, which is what makes us unique. I suspect you know you should write it out, so just dig in and do it.

Personally, I am proud of my penmanship and have received compliments about it. It is not flowery or really very flowing, but it is very readable and distinctive.

I also studied drafting in both mechanical and architectural fields before computers dominated the market and developed very good looking technical penmanship.

I was also a proctor for a number of years and saw some extremely horrendous handwriting.

Having said that, personally, I'd rather receive a letter type-written with a short hand-written "PS:" at the bottom with a hand-written salutation and signature. That a person agonized over writing a letter and are probably insecure about their penmanship is secondary to actually receiving a personal letter.

Also, I am NOT a card guy.
