I went to see him live last night. A friend of mine mentioned he was going to be here, and since he's my girlfriend's favorite artist, I thought it'd be fun to go with her. Turns out my girlfriend couldn't make it, but she insisted I go with my friend and I really enjoyed it. It was a really small venue, so it wasn't hard to have a good view, especially when I'm 6'5" and the other 98% of the concert attendees were girls.

The stuff he played last night was a lot "harder" than what he has up on MySpace and PureVolume - lots of really nice guitar solos and stuff.

It's also tough because we have another John McLaughlin, a weatherman.

I thought this was going to have something to do with the "McLaughlin Group" program.

Same here.

I saw him with Dennis Chambers and Joey deFrancesco once.

****ing terrible.

One piece I really enjoyed, one that was so-so, and the rest of the concert hovered between annoyance and supreme boredom.

I still have no idea what Dennis "My-Other-Set's-an-Abrams-Tank" Chambers was doing in the lineup with those two wankers.

Dennis Chambers is a nice guy. I spoke with him on the phone once. He phoned me.

He began the conversation with "Do you know who I am?"

And I answered, "No, but you can tell me."

Yeah, being a guitarhead, I've tried numerous times to get into (the older) John McLaughlin's stuff... but it all just ends up sounding like electric Muzak with unmotivated key changes. I'm sure it's mathematically brilliant or something, but I kind of like a melody from of a song every once in a while, not neccesarily an exploration of the Pythagorean Theorem.

That "One Night in San Francisco" with Al DiMeola and Paco Delucia certainly has it's moments, though.

Ooh, definitely. Though I didn't really get Di Meola until I saw him live with Chick Corea for the Return To Forever reprisal. Funny how that works - sometimes you gotta watch em play to get hooked.

One of my faves of John McGlaughlin is the album he did with Carlos Santana - Love Devotion Surrender.

But he's less precise with the weather than John McLaughlin, the weatherman.
