I was watching NBC tonight, and noticed that the audio on every show (My Name is Earl, The Office, 30 Rock) has been compressed using some sort of noticeably lossy compression. It is super annoying. Did anybody else notice this? I'd like to figure out if this is NBC in general, or just on the crappy local station (in Tucson, AZ). I'm noticing this on the ads, also, so I'm guessing that it's the local station.

Digital or analog? Their digital signal always seems pretty decent. Though I must admit I'm not much of a TV watcher.

Cable or OTA? It could very well be your local affiliate.

Cox Cable. I guess they could be the problem also. I don't have an antenna anymore, so I can't test OTA vs. Cable.

Likely your cable provider. Comcast was fine.

We get the digital signal over the air and it seems fine.

How could a DIGITAL audio signal be effected by the local affiliate's equipment ?

Wouldn't the deterioration in signal quality play out on both, the audio AND video signal ?

Maybe they're converting the rates on the fly to save a bit of bandwidth. Easily done.

Maybe there is deterioration on both - the eye is much more easily fooled than the ear.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
