Bizarre dealership service experience

So, I dropped off my wife's car (1999 Ford with 120,000 miles) at the dealership for a routine checkup. I wasn't aware of any issues.
About 40 mins later, the service tech comes and says the car is ready. I was like "What ? That's it ?
Nothing wrong with it ?" I thought that something must have been wrong.
"Nope, everything's ok." the tech said.
I was very surprised. Actually, I couIdn't believ it.
I just thought it was odd that they wouldn't find a single thing that was wrong. I guess I just subconsciously expected to be made aware of some issues that needed urgent repair.
I've become so used to being oversold at dealerships, this was completely unexpected.
Kudos to the dealership, I will for sure return.

I used to use independent shops for mechanical work, but as newer cars have become more complex and computerized, I started using the local Toyota dealership for routine maintenance and have been very, very pleased with the service. I've even started letting them do scheduled oil changes because they look things over when they do it.
I think dealerships have learned a lesson about connecting the maintenance with customer loyalty.

I'm not convinced yet. For me it's still hit or miss. I recently took my Nissan in for a major maintenance cycle (30k miles or something) where the manual says to check a number of things. The dealership wanted $600 for the 'premium' maintenance schedule. Never mind that I drive 'schedule 2', which is a much more limited set. They didn't even ask about that — the default was highest fee possible and then see if the customer knows what he wants.

I agree with the hit and miss, there are still big differences between individual dealerships.
Plus, in these days with new car sales down, I bet there is a lot of pressure on the dealers to make up lost profit by selling more on maintenance and service.
I also am not convinced that independent shops provide a better experience or service. Cheaper maybe, but I have seen a fair amount of overselling BS from Midas and others.
