Dreamhost just recently changed their T&C's, and now allows to use 50GB(!!!) for personal backups.
Awesome
Here's a nice tutorial in how to set up Methusalem to make those backups automatically, in a Time Machine fashion.
I heart Dreamhost.

Neat! You may want to mention this thread in the off-site backup thread recently posted.

I think I did (if you have the same thread in mind that I had).

since DH is an over-seller webhost (marketing more space then they actually have), I wonder what will happen if people start using up storage. In the past they've reduced the bandwidth to slow down the websites of people who consume large quantities of space. Using disk storage as a backup, means that tactic won't work too well.

Yeah, and like I said in the other thread, you need upload bandwidth from your own network if your backups are going to be unlike watching paint dry.

Links, please.

Why would they even bother. It's a backup, why would people bother to use these 50GB space to share files, when they have hundreds of GB of webspace available.
Btw, I think this is a terrific deal. All other webhosters (and DH, until recently), forbid in their T&C's to use the webspace for backup purposes.

They look through your webspace, and find files that are not linked to any locally hosted website.
Plus, if you have tons of MP3 or MOV files, they're gonna figure that this is NOT part of your webhosting. If it was, you'd be in even more trouble, given that you'd basically offer copyrighted materials.
I don't know what they would do if you keep a 50GB "My last holiday.MOV" file on your webspace, which in reality is a hidden TrueCrypt container, containing backed up data.

thats quite an obvious thing to do actually (check for files that are not linked to a local site) - had never thought of that.

I'm launching some new sites for a client today - decided to host them on dreamhost (I have their uber hosting, that I use for non-serious (in terms of resources) hosting.
Big mistake, they've been down for some 18 hours - what a joke.

I use, MediaLayer and I recommend them highly. I've never had an outage and their servers are fast. I'd also check out Web Hosting Talk its a great resource for troubleshooting, asking for help, or needing advice on what host to go with.
Edit:
Its these types of forums, there's a few others but web hosting talk is one of the most popular, that I read so many complaints with dreamhost. Use too much space, they slow down your connection, outages and customer support are other frequent complaints.

I use dreamhost for a lot of stuff that isn't all that critical.
I generally find them pretty reliable. Their servers tend to be too slow for applications that demands some horsepower, but otherwise I am pretty happy with them. Can't beat them price-wise, anyhow.

I never suggested to use Dreamhost for mission critical applications.
But for personal home use, they are great.
What I like about them is that they give you a lot of freedom to install your own apps on the servers.
