Forrest Ackerman, agent, editor, discoverer of Ray Bradbury, has died. Many people only know of Forrie as the editor (the FOUNDING editor) of "Famous Monsters of Filmland," but he was a force in fantasy and science fiction publishing and film. Our world is a little poorer because we no longer have Forrie in it.

Here's the LA Times story on his passing.

I have a friend named Forrest Ackerman. I'm glad it wasn't him that died.

Not too many people know of about Forest Ackerman but he discovered Ray Bradbury was the founding editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland, author of a number books and anthologies, appeared in some tv/movies as well.

Looks he passed away friday msnbc

Oh and he was credited for coining the term "sci-fi"

I thought he was immortal - he usually wore Bela Lugosi's Dracula ring.

RIP Forest

Are you serious? Are you and Peter in cahoots?

It's a shame that more folks don't know his name. But good that the Ackermonster lived to a ripe old age.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

I've merged Maflynn's thread from Dec 6 into mine from Dec 5.

As a kid growing up with an imagination, in the days before computer generated video, and even before Star Wars, Forrie was a great source of cool and interesting things. And his magazine drove others; when Starlog Magazine came out (about 8 months before the premier of "Star Wars"), they had a successful pattern to follow.

He has one of the largest collections of Sci-Fi related items in the world. I hope it is somehow left as a museum of props, scripts, never-was's and stuff. He even had the sculpts of the She Creature from the Black Lagoon!!!

Forry bought my first science fiction story. It wasn't much, just a 600 word pun, but he had brought the Perry Rhodan series in translation over from Germany and had a little short fiction section in the back of the book. It was quite a memorable event for me. That $10 sale was enough credentials to get me into the Science Fiction Writers of America back then. That was before they got hard-nosed about what was being a "professional writer" and tried to vote guys like me out. Over the years, I keep my dues up to date and am eternally grateful for that opening wedge into the professional ranks.
