I don't consider women and family members as pets strangely enough.

Yes, he was! I made him pose for about 1/2 hour while I took that set of pictures (using my ultrawide lens and two flash units at maximum power, since of course black fur absorbs light like nothing else).
It was heartbreaking to put him down, but there is no cure for the condition he suffered. He was just shy of his 7th birthday -- we'd had him for only about a year and a half. I still miss him terribly, he was the best dog. Didn't get into his food bag, didn't bark (!), got along great with the cats (in fact, he was best friends with the boy cat), could hold it like a trooper (no accidents, even on 12-hour days), super-friendly, and he learned stuff quickly. He even let the cats eat from his bowl while he was eating with no aggression. He was 80lbs of niceness.
This is the blog post I posted on a private site when it happened:
Tennis balls, dried anchovies and peanut butter.
2008/10/02 23:08 This weekend sucked. Our dog, Dino, suffered a pulmonary embolism and had to be put to sleep.
Early Saturday morning, he vomited (which he did every once in a while), but afterwards, had trouble breathing. We thought he might have inhaled some vomit. Anyway, it didn't get better, and his ribcage started to look like it was under tension. Around 3am I took him to the emergency vet, but took him home since he seemed to be doing a tad better after walking around. But when we woke up, he was much worse and we took him back to the vet. He ended up being there through Monday, when we took him to an internal medicine specialist in Annapolis, who ultimately diagnosed the embolism. At that point, we didn't really have but one choice, since an embolism cannot be treated, and Dino's lung function had deteriorated to the point that he could not handle any activity for more than a few minutes without supplemental oxygen. He could not have survived at home.
We arranged with the specialist to let us walk Dino around the park behind the vet office for a bit, and then she'd come out to do the euthanasia outside. Dino always hated being confined, and I didn't want him to be nervous in a small room at the end. Since doing it at home was impossible -- he likely would not have made it through the drive -- we did it outside. Monday was the first sunny day after a whole weekend of rain and gloom. Dino passed on a beautiful day, in a field, in the sunshine.
He will be missed.
