We just got off a long flight, as we were flying over the Russian federation my wife spotted something strange out of the window. Its was an exact square glowing extremely bright orange. From memory we were quite low 15,000 ft approx. I recorded where we were and it was 'near' Tyumen according to the satellite map on the Virgin Airbus. It was pitch black out but this thing was bright, I can imagine it would have been blinding from the ground and seemed bigger than a football pitch.

Any ideas what it was?

Tyumen is an oil region.

Probably looking at a well-lit oil-extraction campus. They run 24/7.

I'm guessing it was a mine, refinery, or something similar. Up in Wyoming they have several HUGE mines that look quite otherworldly at night.
