http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...pens-road.html

A pound shop has been put out of business - by a rival 99 pence store.

Thrifty shoppers began bypassing Pound World when the competitive shop opened directly opposite.

It is thought people struggling to beat the credit crunch would rather save just one penny by shopping in 99p Stores.

Pound World bosses claim the rush across the high street has got so bad that the shop has seen a 70 per cent drop in turnover.

They have now been forced to close the discount store in Poole, Dorset, due to the nosedive in takings.

Jamie Lang, area manager of Pound World, said the shop's turnover had been stable since the store opened in June last year.

But takings began to tumble when 99p Stores opened across the road just weeks ago - undercutting their prices by just one penny.

Mr Lang said: 'It's amazing that we are having to close because of a 99 pence store.

'But people will go wherever they can get what they need at the cheapest price - even if the difference is just one penny.'

Hussein Lalani, commercial director for 99p Stores, blamed the poor economic climate for the unfortunate situation.

He said: 'We never try to directly affect anyone but it's all healthy competition.

'With tight pockets and wallets these days, there is a lot of competition for the pound on the high street'.

LMAO! funniest thing ive read in a long time, i would have to have walked down that shop in Poole and seen a 99p shop opposite a £1 shop

whats even stranger is that Poole is full of rich people who could probably say 'keep the change' when shopping in the 99p store

From the article's comments; "I dont give the 99p shop much chance of survival, I'm opening a 98p shop next store".

A conscientiously applied program of regular dental care will take care of that problem.

Just the other day I saw a $1.25 store. I was thinking it was a $.99 store that adjusted for inflation.

Of course this is not taking into account the customer service, product offerings, or marketing of either store.

I went into a dollar store once. Once.

I went into a pound store once. Got dragged in by a cheap girlfriend.
Signs all over the place saying "everything £1".
She found something useful. Went to the checkout. Checkout girl turns to her manager, holds up said item and says "how much is this?".

I love dollar/pound stores (they’re called Tiger stores here, a pun on tier = a tenner, which is about a pound). They’re quaint and have funny little doodads.

Yawn .........

Some facts might help !

It wasn't the 99p price that won, it was the fact they were selling more items per 99p than the £1 shop were selling for £1.

ie 2 bottles of Pepsi for £1, or 3 for 99p.

iMac Intel Core i5, 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 21.5" Monitor 10.7.4.
iMac 17" 2.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w 3gb memory (White one) 10.6.8.
Internal 500gb / 160gb plus External 500gb x 2 (2x Time Machine)
