Just saw some pics of the new Dell Adamo laptop. Not bad looking at all. I like the ports in the back rather than on the side. Not that I'd buy one, but it's nice to see some good looking hardware coming from someone other than Apple.

And yes, I realize it's in many ways a rip off of the MacBook. I'm not saying it's necessarily innovative... but it is easy on the eyes.

Likes- ports. I love my MBA but could use a few more ports.
Dislikes- blinky lights below the screen, the pattern nonsense on the back

However, nicest Dell in a while, if not ever.

Nice design, but with no specs released I expect it to be an expensive netbook ($1000) or super-expensive ultra-thing ($2500+).

What's with the short DOF photos? Makes it hard to look at.

I was going to start a new thread on that company and WHY Apple didnt buy them !?!?? some good descriptive videos on their site.

One of the cool things, is they moved the ethernet port onto the powerbrick in order to make the laptop thinner. dont know what that does to ethernet performance but it's a nice design choice.

Theyre also using that new material thats all the rave (carbon firer?), which seems a step ahead of the macbooks (dont know if it's an overall better choice, but it's bleeding edge apparently).

Either way.... from a purely hardware design perspective..... a non Apple notebook worth considering purely for it's looks eh ?

Cheers

I know companies do it every year, but for some reason it still bugs me when every company starts coming out with knockoff Apple designs. Sometimes they're an improvement, but it's like PC companies don't even try anymore. Makes you wonder why the spend so much money on R&D when they clearly just have Apple do it for them. Prepare for an influx of black laptops with chicklet keyboards.

Like I said, though, sometimes companies make improvements on Apple's designs. That Voodoo laptop is pretty dang sweet.

Totally agree with you there, and i think i heard one of the guys on their site giving some props to Apple. Purely based on looks, it does look like Apple's previous offerings. Just thinner, lighter and better materials apparently. I think Apple would have benefitted from their sense of design (aligned with Apple) and their industrial design and use of materials.

The time of the 'designer PC' is at hand..... too bad the software they run isnt worth a penny to me.

For a Dell, it’s nice. That ‘bulge’ below on the back below the screen, though, is horrible. I’ve always hated laptops that had that. In itself enough that I’d never consider buying one, even if the rest of the machine looks quite nice.

That Voodoo thing, though. Now that is pure sex.

That thing is going to be a fingerprint magnet, though. I imagine that the area where you rest your wrist would look pretty bad after a while.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Yep. Makes me think of where iPods have gone. The Classic may not be as sexy ass the old 5g, but by god, no fingerprints.

Why is it that all Windows laptop makers feel like the shell of their computers ought to look like a woman's purse?

Why is every non apple product in the universe compared to an apple product?

Similarly, why is it that whenever an attractive non-Apple laptop (or other product) is released, someone has to complain that it's a rip-off of an equivalent Apple product?

Neither of the laptops shown in this thread look that much like Apple's laptops. They do look pretty good, though. We'll have to wait and see how this thing is priced and equipped.

I don't remember seeing thin, shiny black laptops with chicklet keyboards before Apple started making them.

I saw a Sony subnotebook with a built-in webcam and a glossy screen years before an Apple one showed up. It was sometime in 2003 I think.

I'm not comparing features, I'm comparing the look and general style of the laptop.

And curses to Sony or HP or whomever came out with the glossy screen. I HATE it.

It had a matte finish. Also, it was more rounded than many of its competitors.

Fact is, there are tons of designs for notebooks and they all look a bit similar. They are just notebook computers, after all. How much variation can there be?

Because the men's purses look too bulky.

Before they were bought by HP, Voodoo was just a high-end gaming-computer company; and AlienWare wanna-be (though, they were quite successful for their size and had a few cooling-technology innovations). All of their parts were off-the-shelf; their desktop and laptop shells were all white-label 3rd party stuff. Before HP, this was the height of their industrial design:

(this case appears to be branded from just after the HP acquisition, but the case was designed about a year or two before)

Not really anything there that would be of much interest to Apple.

If you look carefully, you'll notice that the Adamo's keys are cupped and not chicklets.

Given that the demo model is running Vista Premium, I'm going with "super-expensive ultra-thing".

Exactly. Just because it is rectangular, has a keyboard and screen doesn't make it an Apple rip-off.

Oooh, good eye. That makes it completely different, I shouldn't be so quick to judge Dell.

I don't like the way that there's that bump on the back.

I still think the M1330 is Dell's awesomest laptop to date. I sure love mine.
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...

Yup. You can pretty much give all credit for their cool designs to the HP industrial design team.
