What could this mean ?

http://arstechnica.com/journals/appl...ithout-the-mac

My first instinct tells me that this has to with with the hardware-software 'connection' in Apple products. And the 'Mac' being the hardware and 'OS X' being the software(OS). I hope that those two never get decoupled.

Why do you think they opted for just 'OS X' ?

Cheers

Since "OS X" has been the name for the iPhone's OS from day one, they probably just now realized they'd never trademarked it.

I'm sure they called it a trademark in the ™ sense, but now they're making it official in the registered trademark ® sense. But wasn't there a similarly named Unix variant at one time?

I think people are making more of this then whats really warranted. They just wanted to protect the IP and trademarks.

Seriously. They'd trademark "X" if they could.

It means that "desktop" computing is no longer the preserve of PCs and laptops and is now spreading to all other devices. Apple are unifying both their desktop and mobile OS into one brand. The computer will still be a "Mac" and the phone an "iPhone", but the system will be "OS X" only. Fairly straightforward if you ask me.

Honestly, in day-to-day reference in speech, I doubt most of us say it as "Mac OS X", but just shorten it to "OS X". Makes sense for them to trademark an easier day to day term for their operating system.

But the problem with that proposal (unified branding as OS X for both the iPlatforms and Macs) is that iPhone OS X applications are not binary compatible with Mac OS X, and Mac OS X applications are not binary compatible with iPhone OS X. They both share a common base, but the higher levels of the systems are distinct. I don't think the Mac in Mac OS X will be cut out any time soon even if unified branding makes sense in other respeects.

Maybe they looked closely at the Psystar lawsuit and are covering their butts in case something goes wrong and they are actually forced to license OSX? Not that I believe it...I'm just throwing it out there.
