Honestly I've found with my external display for my MacBook I've found I typically only use the one monitor and at the most watch TV on the other one.

BTW, I found funny that one is a more tidy desk that most of the ones which have just one single monitor.

I like the Saturian Eclipse, it's one of my favorite pictures of all times.

Anyway, as Mac Elitists, we all have to collectively raise our noses to 4 DELL monitors and Windows, correct?

Could be Cash's desk. All the furniture in the picture looks like sanded plywood.

Well, Windows doesn't have Exposé... yet.

Alt-tab is old school. I hear all the new whippersnappers program the middle mouse button to activate exposé.

I would have thought shifuimam's setup was more like this...

I use an additional monitor with my MacBook. It is especially useful when working on anything involving tablets like Photoshop, Aperture, Pages, iWeb, Word, Excel ...

I would find it extremely difficult to go back to one unless it was a huge widescreen monitor.

I have a single 22" widescreen for my Mini, and I still miss having dual displays, even if it was just my 14" iBook and a 19" widescreen...there's just something about having a separate display for other things that makes me feel more organized.

If you mean the one from NASA, then yeah. That's my wallpaper right now, mostly because I haven't gotten around to making some new wallpaper to go with the new setup.

You mean because it's not widescreen? WS is pointless when you're doing web development. I'd rather have two 4:3 than one 16:9.

I'll never go back to one. Not with the way I work on a regular basis. It just doesn't work for me.

Oh, it's not really that messy:

It's categorized into sections - utilities, browsers, text editors, graphic apps, work-related (Remedy, MSSQL Server Management Studio, etc.), Office apps, and media apps. It's very fast for me, because I can remember exactly where an icon is (I also use TinkerTool to move the dock to the left corner in OS X) without thinking about it.

The three Firefox icons are for different versions - 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0, so I can ensure compatibility across all three.

It's super useful for just about anything. I usually keep my site editor (we use Dreamweaver because it makes writing CF apps very fast) on one and my SQL software and browser on the other. I couldn't even go to just one widescreen, since that makes it more difficult to maximize two windows side-by-side.

Would you consider maybe putting a 30" monitor in the middle or do you need to have two split screens?

I've considered going back to dual monitors. I have this crappy 19" that I got dirt cheap from CompUSA that I was considering using for Twitter, but I found that when I had two monitors, I'd pay less attention to what I was doing on one app because some other app was trying to get my attention. So instead, I just went down to one and decided when I needed to switch apps.

I just work better with two, especially when i need to look at things side-by-side (like when I'm writing an SQL query and want to look at my database structure).

The coordinators at work have a six-monitor setup like those, too. And though it’s rather small in that picture there, it even seems they use AS400, too.

(Also, the disagreement in the title of this thread irks my eye)

That is a 911/Emergency Response center.

I have found Spaces handy in this regard.

Though I've had trouble beating the "Hide Application" reflex out of my system.

Well, it's also an inherent difference between OS X and Windows - you can't actually fully maximize all windows in OS X. In Windows, you can. While many Mac users think this is poor form or detrimental to multitasking, I personally use it constantly and prefer the Windows construct. Because of that, having two monitors is better than one.

Yeah...I've used virtual desktops long before Spaces. It just doesn't cut it for me. It's all about how you work...

Why are you so pale shifuimam? You should have a nice tan with that exposure.

This is a pleasantry, I mean no offense by it.

I have two 19" Dells at work - couldn't do my job without them.

shifuimam, have you looked at Launchy - its helped my workflow since I installed it, bit like Quicksilver in terms of app launcher.

I've tried Launchy...it's just not my thing. I'm more likely to just use the Run... dialog.

I type insanely fast, and I know all the absolute paths to the apps I use most, and I usually have all the apps I need running all the time.

I'm a freak, I know.

And I'd be all walnutty if LCDs emitted UV rays.

That whole maximizing window thing just works better with dual.

I've used one big one before (dated a guy with a 24" Samsung)...it just doesn't cut it for me.

Of course, I don't really need four...but damn, it sure is awesome.

Funny you should mention that.

I am currently typing on my 24" iMac. It has a second 24" monitor attached to it... and that monitor is a Dell with Windows XP running in a window on it through Parallels.
