Well, that's mighty cool of Apple.

Cliff notes:

Some guy has problems with his MacBook Pro. Apple repairs it but the problems continue.

Apple finally agrees to replace it. Guy gets his brand new machine, and he ships back the old one.

A little later he gets another package. On it there is a sticker that says "Surprise!". Guess what? It's his old machine, working fine.

He calls Apple, and they confirm both machines are his to keep.

My Mighty Mouse as supplied brand new with my new refurbished iMac went faulty very quickly, or so I thought.

It became intermittent scrolling down.

Rang Apple, they sent me a replacement, when it arrived, it was a Wireless Mighty Mouse !

Turns out my "faulty" one just needed scroll pip cleaning.

I did get a little fed up replacing the rechargeable AA's every fortnight, and in the end stopped using the Wireless version because it interfered with one of my 2.4ghz CCTV cameras.

So, I love Apple too, even more.

iMac Intel Core i5, 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 21.5" Monitor 10.7.4.
iMac 17" 2.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w 3gb memory (White one) 10.6.8.
Internal 500gb / 160gb plus External 500gb x 2 (2x Time Machine)

That is ultra-mega cool! Of course I don't want to have problems with MY Macs to get into that situation, but I'm very happy that when someone did get there, Apple played hero.

You two-timer. You joined anandtech before MacNN. Your only saving grace is that you have more posts here than over at anandtech. Otherwise, you'd be in for a burnination for being a traitor.

PS: Cool freaking story. Way to go Apple!

Heh. It could be said I'm a traitor the other way around. I didn't buy my first Mac until 2001 (when OS X 10.1 landed), but I had already joined MacNN in 2000 when I was still using Windows on my main computer... eyeing Macs from afar... until OS X was non-beta. I hated OS 9 with a passion.

I got my iBook 600 with 10.1 only find it was IMO still very beta-ish. (10.0 was almost like an alpha.) It seemed to get a lot better with 10.2 Jag though.

My friend was in his local apple store, having his farking titanium G4 Powerbook looked at, while also eyeing a new replacement. He got the replacement in the form of a new MacBook Pro. He left the new and old machines there for Apple to swap his stuff over. They called him like an hour later to say they had dropped his old machine. Data's fine. New machine is ready to be picked up. Err, new machines. The purchased MacBook Pro, and the free MacBook to replace the PowerBook G4. Titanium! Oh, and they gave him back the Titanium machine, and he has it working fine now.

Sick!

I had a great time with Apple years ago with a problem rev. C iMac. Replaced, upgraded. Nice.

So he's without his laptop for days while Apple gives him the mail it back and forth hassle, and then in the end all he gets is a working laptop to go with his broken laptop? And that's considered good for AppleCare?

I'd rather have an OEM who is on site the next day to replace the broken part, even if it means I don't get a free broken laptop.

He has two working laptops for the price of one. I consider that outstanding.

I wouldn't. I would rather have the free laptop.

I have a similar story. I bought a new Al iMac in August 2007 or so. Everything was working fine except one day (3 weeks after I had bought it), it didn't boot up. It just would just have a boot chime and reboot and repeat. I made a reservation to the Genius Bar and the guy took a look at it and tried to make it boot and had the same problem. He said that even though it was out of the 2 weeks time frame to return the machine, he would just give me a brand new iMac right there on the spot. So I left with a brand new iMac. Pretty nice.
