Don't forget to set your watches one hour ahead.
That's gonna make for some pretty confusing weeks, since different countries and regions set their DST at different dates.

Sure, the summer time setting is nice. It's the winter one that I don't see the point of.

You're right. We should never have winter time. DST all the time, plus move the clocks ahead another hour so it doesn't bet dark at 5pm.
I hate winter.

QFMFT.
There was a petition a couple years back to get rid of it in AK, but apparently you can't just choose which "time" you want to be in. The way it would work is that for 1/2 the year AK would be two hours different from the west coast, and one hour different for the other 1/2.
That's just stupid. Apparently it takes a constitutional change to "change" time zones?
Keep in mind, AK used to be four time zones, and with the extremes of light and dark we have, the whole point of ST/DST is absurd.

The winter setting is the normal adjusted time. Not sure what you mean.

Why was it created and what is the point? I once heard it was so school children would not be walking to school in the dark, but it was never validated.

DST is the lamest thing ever.
And I didn't have to worry about it until April 2004, when stupid Indiana decided to join in the insanity.
What's even better is that certain counties are on Central, and a few still don't switch their clocks. So it's not even the same time in the entire damn state.

yes, its archaic, but it was done at least the latest change for economic reasons, that is when its light out, people tend to shop more, at least that's the thinking. Of course when congress changed the date a few years ago, they could not fathom the cost and work effort needed to update hundreds if not thousands of systems. I don't expect give that work effort to see any change to the date or any sort of abolishment.

If anyone has hard numbers to back up that there's more shopping during DST, I'd love to see them. And I would also love to see who voted for this latest change and how they thought ANYONE would concretely benefit from moving the dates so that DST runs 8 months out of the year. And how those lawmakers actually benefited from voting for it, legally or otherwise.
Disgruntled? You betcha! I HATE this switching back and forth idiocy.

Here in Wasilla, in 10 days we'll have gained the hour we just "lost".
Even in Phoenix they'll have made up the loss in a month.
Does it really "help".
(Yes, I realize AZ doesn't do DST.)

I like DST (though we don’t call it DST, just ‘summer time’). It prevents the Sun from rising at 3:30 in the morning in summer.

I live without DST and I HATE it. Sunlight streams in the windows at four in the morning in summer and we are chronically out of sync with the business centres elsewhere in the country half the year.
I fully support bringing IN DST to Queensland.

I can't believe no one is bringing up the most important issue here: global warming! DST is just a liberal conspiracy to increase the amount of daylight hitting the Earthy thereby warming the planet in apparently confirmation of their moronic 'theories' so that they can gain the political clout to form a world Communist government! As soon as that that happens you can be sure that they'll get rid of DST, thus undoing the climate damage while claiming it was really their idiotic policies of banning modern technology that actually did it!

Happy DST everyone.
I'd like to see DST eliminated - leave it with the 'extra' hour of daylight all year long.
Heck, add an extra Saturday too.

Adjust everyone's clock by 30 minutes (the average) and leave it.
Several studies have shown that DST actually costs more money.

We tried that once (in Dominican Republic) around 9 years ago and it sucked; the sun would set at 17:00 hrs. During the summer the sun comes out 6:00~6:15 and during winter 6:30~7:00.

I remember that! I don't think everyone knew about this though. People don't even know when hurracaines are coming.
But I don't really like it when it is 6:00 a.m. and it is completely dark outside, I like sunny days, so I like to wake up and see the sun outside.

Question: I want to set my iPhone alarm to 6.30 ready to watch the F1 race start in the morning at 7. So if I set the alarm to 6.30 and leave my iPhone on in Airplane Mode, will it sync to the hour forward? Does it matter if Airplane Mode is on or off, if its charging or on battery power?

I'd love year-long DST.
On the photography side of things, it's difficult to book clients on weekdays during the winter, because by the time they get off of work and get dressed, it's already dark. Plus, it's nice to be deceived into thinking it's still in the middle of the night at 6:00 AM on days when you don't have to get up early.

Wait...so DST starts on a different day in Europe? I didn't know that.

Doubtful. The way your phone knows what time zone you're in is by the cellular signal. Airplane mode turns off the cellular radio in the phone, so it has no way of knowing (unless, I suppose, you're on Wifi, but I'm fairly certain it also turns off the wireless radio).

Check the link from the OP, it has a neat listing of when DST starts in which countries.
Morocco’s seems rather odd to me: 1 June till 21 August—why even bother, then? And Western Australia and Mauritius puzzle me: they both start DST today, but the DST end date is listed as “N/A”?! Does that mean they just keep going one hour ahead every year, without ever going back the other way again?

I agree. The closer you are to the equator, the less need you have for DST. You'd be better off going off it entirely, then your time relative to the rest of the world only changes twice, not four times.
edit: My geography's off, it's actually not that close to the equator. Oh well.

Mauritius just started up recently with daylight savings time again.
I believe it's actually up for a vote in parts of Australia, so they may not actually go back on it in the Spring. Remember that Australia is in that little part of the world where the toilets run backwards*: they actually end DST now, and it doesn't start up again until September or October (assuming they let it....)
Another comprehensive list of DST Rules. timeanddate.com is a pretty good site for this information.

The one surpirsing thing about DST is that nobody ever announces this officially in anything that really reaches people. I miss it every single year!
(i really don't like local news and i don't commute via mass transit anymore so i don't read any papers - but still! where is the websites alerting us?!?!)

The Naval Observatory cues you in on their web site. But it ain't easy to find it on their (recently redesigned) site.
The thing to remember is that it's now DST for about 8 months of the year in the US. What is up with that? Most of the US isn't in a high enough latitude for the extra TWO MONTHS to make any appreciable difference in evening daylight... Sorry, this is a rant-worthy subject for me.

So there is legislation going through in AK right no that will do away with DST... But they are still pursuing the ass-backwards way which will put us two hours off of the west coast for part of the year, and one hour for the rest.
Let me reiterate my previous beef: we used to be FOUR TIME ZONES! The fact that we can't "pick" which one we want to be is ludicrous.
