So I use a commercial real estate listing service to list properties that I sell or lease. Loopnet.com. They have a problem coding their HTML so I call to report it because it causes problems with functionality of their site. Before they can send a trouble ticket off, they require me to clear all my cookies and cache. I said fine to cache, but to clear all my cookies!

Are they out of their frakking minds. She tells me she is trying to help and I inform her that I understand that but in reality by clearing my cookies that would in fact cause me to waste mucho time with all the websites I use that need them. Talk about a loss of preferences. I told her that in fact her help would cause me heachaches. End of phone call because they are stubborn. OK, rant over.

What you should do in cases like this is to use a different browser from what you usually use - if you use Safari, try Firefox, or vice-versa. Then you can clear the cookies on that browser, which you don't use anyway, and you won't lose anything, and then you can get the idiots on the phone to move on to something else.

If the person on the phone seems sufficiently intelligent (which often isn't the case), you can just say "Okay, I just tried it in both Safari and Firefox, two completely different browsers, so any issues in the cache or the cookies wouldn't cross over to the other browser" and not have to clear anything. This won't work if they don't understand how these things actually work, though.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Whenever I get a stupid request from tech support, I just say I did, and that I still had the problems. No point in arguing with them, they are just bots working off of their checklists.

You’re making the vast assumption the idiot on the other end of the line actually knows what a browser is.

I think you made a big deal out of nothing. Clearing the cookies shouldn't be a big deal for you.

I think it was you who might have been stubborn; she was just doing her job.

Then just lie. "OK, my cookies are clear. Now what?"

That's why I heavily qualified the second paragraph and said that this only works if the person on the line seems more intelligent than the average 6 year old, which often isn't the case.

Create a new user count and try it from there. Takes all of 2 minutes.

And simply firing up a different web browser takes all of 2 seconds.

'Cause they're small cakes, of course ('cookie' = diminutive of 'cake'). Duh.

I imagine cakes must really bog down your browser.
