Right, we're planning a long weekend in Barcelona. Seems like the city is pretty well catered for in the public transport department so we're wondering where we should stay. Prices seem fairly steep for hotels, I'd be willing to pay 150€ per night (it would be nice if breakfast was included).

Suggestions my dear MacNN Lounge dwellers?

Watch out for pickpockets, especially on crowded trains or other public transport.

They sometimes use large bags to cover what they're doing.

They will work in pairs, or three's.

The Spanish for thief is LADRON, shout it out if affected.

I can not agree more.

If you can survive the whole weekend without something getting stolen you are doing very well.

Recent tricks - they use a tourist map to cover their hands and target you when you are crossing the street from behind and beside you. (Got this from friends who were there few weeks ago) Hotel lobby area, while you are waiting to check in or out they grab stuff unattended or get in line with you at the reception desk.

Wow, got the same reaction from colleagues. Never heard about that before.

Reckon that we're going to be SOL for our trip with the swine flu stuff going on. Oh well.

I had a bag stolen in Barcelona. After having travelled extensively around Asia, Africa and so on I let my gueard down for a moment on a bench in the plaza catalunya (I was kind of tired after a long ride up from Sevilla). I'd just spent a month in Morocco, during ramadan. Of course the guy, Moroccan clearly - we even spoke about le pays, made off with the ONE bag I had filled with useless moroccan trinkets from a month's stay. That and a film camera and several rolls of film. So watch it.

On the plus side there's a very nice little hotel on one of the floors of a building - the 8th? - right on the plaza. If you can get one of the corner rooms right over the plaza it's a FABULOUS deal. The Ginebra I think.
