If dogs don't take pleasure in the pain of others, what is the point of messing up my shoes?

The elderly Mr Richmond in 'Woman of Straw' definitely took pleasure in the pain of others -- emotional and physical!

One could easily interpret this as a firm claim there is no dark side to Railroader in this regard.

Maybe it’s just because it’s 2:25 AM and I’ve been working on a stupid concept development paper for the past nine hours straight, but my brain really can’t come up with any logical image of how a filthy rag born in sin is/looks like, nor what or how it does.

The amount you are willing to share. Though one would imagine more pain would equate to more insight for the purposes of this thread. I take pleasure in watching Nancy Grace. That qualifies, but doesn't tell you much, and is pretty tepid on top of that.

Of course, there's also the (much darker) flipside of being displeased others are not in pain.

Edit: Personally, I'm more guilty of this.

Sometimes I take joy in causing moderate to severe discomfort, does that count?

I've seen a cat torture a mouse. I've never seen a dog do the same thing.

There are certain members of this forum that ...

That depends. I'll admit, it's something I don't quite "get".

I can enjoy the other person enjoying it, which kind of means it's not really discomfort in the standard sense.

What is severe to you? One of those rolly things with needles on it? Or are you thinking more bondage discomfort?

I'm thinking more about emotional discomfort, such as practical jokes. Nothing that causes long term distress, though some tricks can take years to play out.

On the physical side, some pain can be... umm... pleasant. I've been known to like a little bruising, biting, and scratching, when the mood is right.

I'm 100% in favor of causing social discomfort. Like Michael Cera-esque awkward moments.

Last night when I beat my two friends at monopoly, I took pleasure in their defeated agony and gloated. So yes!

At some point I decided that if I can't be socially comfortable, then I'd just try and be as awkward as possible. It's worked for me so far.

I guess I take more pleasure in the misfortune of others rather than the pain of others. I admit, I get a certain satisfaction out of seeing some people go through trouble. Bad, I know.

Now you've got me wondering even more. You can get rolly needle things and some itchy rope anywhere. What's the payoff like on a multi-year practical joke?

As this is relatively universal, can you (or anyone else) give me some examples of who would be on the "lesser" side of wicked?

You can also include those who have yet to fall, as I would think you are displeased by their continued fortune (lack of pain).

I think most people experience some type of envy at some point in their lives--and probably fairly often. When the person you are envious of goes through some type of difficulty, I think those around that person--even close friends--experience some kind of validation or relief which one might characterize as pleasure. It's probably a better idea to figure out what characteristics allowed the person you are envious of to have the good fortune they enjoyed -- and try to emulate that.

I agree. But pleasure is not the right word. There's a certain feeling of relief, perhaps. Bad things have to happen to people. If they happen to someone else, it is natural to feel that the statistical dispensation of misfortune in the world has been temporarily satisfied.

I would take great pleasure in watching the contestants, judges, and the entire studio audience of American Idol getting tarred and feathered.

Pain... not normally... frustration, difficulty, unfortunate situations... depends on how much I dislike them

For example if James Dobson was hit by a bus today I'd probably not be happy about, but if his windows were broken by the Phelps family... I'd probably laugh a lot.

If my boss had her purse stolen I'd feel bad, if she accidently tipped a nice waiter 20 instead of 2, I'd feel good.
