Willard & Spackman, Pedretti, and Case-Smith. All OT textbooks. Hopefully I'll be able to take my certification test on the 25th or so, and I can for once put down the texts and pick up "Wicked" again-I'm about 1/3 into it but school and pleasure reading don't go together well for me.

Chunky is ALWAYS a recommendation.

but actually yes it is quite good. Pt 2 of 3 and in no way anything other than a diverting read but entertaining.

Sorry to disappoint, but that is really what I am currently reading. I committed to finishing it before picking up anything else. I have read the KJV, NIV, and NASB all the way through (NASB 3 times), so now I am doing it with the ESV.

Getting anything interesting out of comparing these specific translations? I've always had trouble with KJV's wording and the archaic capitalization used tends to confuse me, but the New American Standard version loses some grandeur in places...

Straight reading-wise it is a bear. But for in depth study I highly prefer it. The NIV so far has been the easiest straight read. I find I am moved most by the NASB and ESV. I find a lot of "grandeur" in those translations.

The NASB and ESV seem pretty similar in regards to grammar and sentence structure.

I loathe reading the KJV. Hardest read of my life.

You haven't disappointed me, and you took my teasing in good stride.

I definitely don't have a problem with reading multiple versions of the Bible, I even started a thread on it.

I finished Crime and Punishment. It is intense. Definitely read it if you can.

And now I've started this guy. Lynch is a poet, but also an undertaker. This is his collection of essays. Looks very interesting.

Crime & Punishment remains the only book I have ever started and been unable to finish. It was just so... dry. I couldn't force myself past the third chapter.

Anyway, I'm currently finishing this:

Really, Dakar? I wouldn't be surprised if you just picked up a bad translation. I found it (if you'll forgive the journalistic cliche) shattering.

Michio Kaku's Physics of the Impossible. - not as good as I hoped it would be, seems repetitious if you've read his other books.

That may well be. The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov is probably one of my all time favorite books. I own three translations of it, and one is far superior to the other two. As a matter of fact, I have an extra loaner copy of the good translation that I borrow out as opposed to having someone pick it up on their own and get one of the lesser translations.

This is the better translation, if anyone is interested

It's a possibility. My track record with classics (the few I've read) isn't exactly solid, though. Many times, something seems to be lost on me.

For a class next week: The Secret Doctrine: H.P. Blavatsky

It's not bad for a heavily abridged commentary, but I prefer the unabridged 2 volume set. 1400+ page books seem to scare people, for some reason.

For fun: The Hero of Ages: Book Three of Mistborn: Brandon Sanderson

Fun series, Sanderson has a real knack for character development.

Dark, yes. As for un-engaging, that's of course relative to the kinds of books the individual reader happens to find engaging.
