My theory:

They have automated packing stations, which are more economical to run with a few standard sized boxes, rather than many box sizes. Plus, they probably get much better prices on the boxes when they buy millions of few standard sizes, rather than thousands of many different sizes.

They have much smaller standard sizes which would easily accommodate this. With the Amazon smiley and everything.

$12, which is a rip, but it evens out somewhat with the free shipping and craft paper.

I dunno.

I can only recall smaller sizes for books, but those automated anyways, probably cut on the fly from a big sheet of cardboard and then folded into a box by a machine.

They rarely use the smaller packages. They seem to love to use one that is slightly too big for my mail slot, so everything I order i have to go to the post office and pick up myself.

I just bought a video game from them and it came in a super tight cardboard sleeve. It was very minimal.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Top one is what the velcro came in.

Note the ginormous measurements.

I just got some CDs from them in a box barely larger than the CD jewel case.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Maybe they think that a bigger box is less likely to be lost in the shuffle.

didn't think of taking photos of these kinda things.

i ordered a slimline DVD/CD adapter...which is about, oh, 3/8" wide x 5" long x 1/2" thick.

came in box almost 18" x 24" x 10" STUFFED in bubble wrap. so much so, the box bulged on the top and bottom. but the adapter; was in an anti-static bag at one end of the box, outside the bubble wrap.
