I have a relatively new Sharp LCD TV. When I use the Smart Stretch feature, it'll occasionally stretch the center of the image instead of the sides. The only way to fix it is to change channels.

Is this normal for Sharp TVs? It still has the hardware warranty, I'm thinking of sending it in. I'm just worried about getting a refurbished TV with dead pixels or something.

Google hasn't turned up anything. So no one else has this problem?

Then I have black bars on the sides. Ironic that it's a digital broadcast in SD format.

this will change a lot faster now that the DTV switch has happened... a lot more studios will go to 16/9

Why is this a problem? Surely you aren't afraid of burn-in? Set it to grey bars if you are.

Think about why you bought the TV in the first place. Why buy a fancy new TV with good picture if you are going to stretch it and then only pretend it has a good picture?

I'm just worried that my TV might be failing.
