My wife and I are gonna grill steaks, bake some potatoes, and generally kick back and enjoy our "empty nest." It's been actually very nice getting used to being "successful parents" instead of "active parents," and it's nice to see our son succeeding on his own.

But we're just planning to be "a couple" and enjoy each other's company for Father's Day. What about everyone else? What are you doing this Sunday?

We're carving a memorial for my Dad on one of the trees at their house, as this is our first Father's Day since he passed away a few months back.

Fathers' Day was last month, on May 21st.

IIRC, I had a rehearsal that day.

I had considered adding a note about the Fathers' Day I was talking about being for the US... Guess I should have done it after all.

Father's Day is just a white holiday invented by greeting card companies, and I'm above celebrating it.

...yet Mothers' Day is holy and warrants spending tons of cash on Mom? It's a "greeting card-inspired" holiday too. But what's wrong with NOT buying a card and just taking time to recognize and remember Dad?

I'm not sure what you mean by "white holiday," though...

I had figured it was a different day (if it existed at all) in the UK. Thanks for the information.

I never bothered to ask it - he was long gone before I turfed up.
(And before anyone asks, I'm not bothered by this in the slightest - you don't miss what you've never had. Something akin to not missing owning a Veyron.)

I see that I've dredged up some unpleasantness.... I'm very sorry about that. I love my dad a lot, but I understand that not everyone loves their own dad like that.

Eh. It's not your fault. I'm just feeling emo.

At least I'm not also schnockered, or else there'd be some serious thread-crapping going on right now.

June is such an expensive month! Mother's birthday, father's birthday, aunt's birthday, grandmother's birthday. We'll just take the old man out for a meal.

Working, which I rarely do on a Sunday. My own dad's been gone for 27 years, and my two girls are out of town, so I switched a day with someone else so he could have the day off for a family event.

I'll be gathering up the wife and five daughters, heading to an eating establishment with my father-in-law and stuffing myself to capacity.

And President Obama has a very nice little article in today's Parade magazine about fatherhood and fathers' responsibilities. "Inventing" a holiday (a minor one, of course) to recognize fathers seems hardly the stuff of "the Man oppressing..." well,....anyone.

It's also my 12th anniversary.

We're doing nothing special. My local church honored me by giving me a basket full of tools (some screw drivers, saws, chisels, pliers, channel locks, vise grips ...).

Took my dad, my brother, and my kids shooting. Started at the house with an Eddie the Eagle (teaches gun safety), then talked some more about safety, then headed out. Good times!

Well we had a nice day. I called my Dad and talked with him for a nice long while-until he had to go to my sister's house for her to cook him dinner. Then another couple came over and we had our steaks (broiled not grilled-too darn hot out!) and chatted for a while. Really a nice day.
